In this post, we’re taking a look at the Euro 2024 Group A odds as we give you tips and preview all the betting and fixtures.

Teams In Euro 2024 Group A

Germany | Scotland | Hungary | Switzerland

Germany

Nickname: Die Mannschaft

FIFA Ranking: 16

Manager: Julian Nagelsmann

Previous Best Finish at the Euros: Winners (1972, 1980, 1996)

Finish at Euro 2020: Round of 16

Germany qualified for Euro 2024 automatically due to their status as competition hosts. However, their form in 2023 was poor with 5 defeats, 2 draws and 2 wins, although 1 of those victories did come 2-1 against France.

In 2024 their prospects look brighter with another win over France this time 0-2 and a 2-1 win against the Netherlands during the March Friendlies.

Manager Julian Nagelsmann has experimented with variations of a 4-4-2, 3-4-2-1 and 4-2-3-1 so far with the latter of those three the likely for them to favour having used it in both their March fixtures. They were dominant in possession for both games 58% vs France and 62% against Netherlands. There is a strong pool of talent to choose from too with “world class” talent from back to front.

The Key Players for Germany in the summer will be in midfield with Captain Gundogan (33) who despite getting on in years remains an all-action midfielder who is a force in both attack and defence. Accompanying him in a more advanced attacking midfield position or out wide will be Jamal Musiala (21) who is an elite dribbler who doesn’t give the ball away often.

The biggest challenge for Germany will be to deal with the home crowds’ pressure, there will be expectations on them to perform in front of the fans so consistent focus and coolness under pressure will be required for success.

Scotland

Nickname: The Tartan Army

FIFA Ranking: 39

Manager: Steve Clarke

Previous Best Finish at the Euros: Group stage (1992, 1996, 2020)

Finish at Euro 2020: Group stage

Scotland qualified for Euro 2024 due to finishing runner-up qualifying Group A coming 4 points back of Spain with a record of 5 wins, 3 draws and 1 loss from their games against Spain, Norway, Georgia and Cyprus. They scored 17 goals and conceded 8 with the highlight being a 2-0 win over the Spaniards.

Scotland are another side who have experimented with their formations from usually some variation with 3 at the back including 3-4-2-1, 3-4-3 and 3-5-2. Although they have used 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1 I’d expect them to use a 3-4-2-1 in the summer. There’s plenty of tactical flexibility in the side with the likes of McTominay capable of dropping into CB or pushing further forward into AM.

The Key Players for Scotland during Euro 2024 will be Captain Andy Robertson (30) who will be a huge threat going forward from LB but is also more than competent defensively. The other will be Scott McTominay who will be coming off a double-digit tally for Man United in 23/24.

My main cause for concern with the Scots will be picking themselves up from their form in 2024. So far they’ve lost 0-1 against Northern Ireland and 4-0 against the Netherlands during the March friendlies. While a win against Gibraltar pre-tournament is likely, I think it’s huge for them to also beat Finland so they can enter the tournament not lacking in confidence.

Hungary

Nickname: Magyarok

FIFA Ranking: 26

Manager: Marco Rossi

Previous Best Finish at the Euros: Third Place 1964

Finish at Euro 2020: Group Stage

Hungary qualified for Euro 2024 when they topped Group G with an unbeaten run of form with 5 victories and 3 draws from their games against Serbia, Montenegro, Lithuania and Bulgaria with Serbia 4 points back in 2nd place. They scored 16 goals and conceded 7.

Hungary are another team that favours the 3-4-2-1 formation which they’ve almost exclusively used throughout both 2023 and 2024. They typically tend to have slightly less of the ball averaging 49.7% possession but are decent on it with a pass completion average of 80.8% to pair with an average of 14.3 aerials won per match.

Liverpool Midfielder and Captain Dominik Szoboszlai will be their main man at Euro 2024. He will likely be positioned as one of the two AMs in front of the striker and will be tasked with being their main creative outlet. Their other player to keep an eye on is Kerkez who will operate LWB/LM and his tenacity and endeavour in attack and defence will also be crucial.

Hungary ahead of Euro 2024 will play the Republic of Ireland and Israel. My main cause for concern is that having been handed a relatively easy qualifying group and booking relatively easy pre-tournament games is their experience against stronger sides. If they're to get out of the group or go further they’ll need to replicate their performances against Germany and the like.

Switzerland

Nickname: A-Team

FIFA Ranking: 19

Manager: Murat Yakin

Previous Best Finish at the Euros: Quarter Finals 2020

Finish at Euro 2020: Quarter Final

Switzerland qualified for Euro 2024 when they finished runner-up in Group I on 17 points and 5 points back of Romania. Their 4 wins, 5 draws and 1 loss was enough to marginally finish ahead of Israel and clear of Belarus, Kosova and Andorra. They were top-scorers in the group with 22 goals but conceded 11 along with Israel.

Switzerland didn’t have a regular formation in 2023 utilising 4-3-2-1, 3-4-2-1, 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3. However, they have seemingly settled on 3 at the back which has been used in a 3-5-2 and 3-4-2-1 in 2024. The Swiss have a very experienced side with multiple centurions in the squad so you can expect to see a streetwise team come the summer.

Captain Centurion and former Arsenal man Granit Xhaka (31) will be crucial to their chances of getting out of the group. Another player is the magician Xherdan Shaqiri (32) who has 30 goals in 121 appearances and is always capable of magic on the pitch.

My concern for Switzerland will be their overreliance on older players, who may have to manage more in terms of fitness and durability. Sommer (35), Rodriguez (31), Xhaka (31) and Shaqiri (32). They may need some of their young talent to come of age at Euro 2024.

The favourite to win Group A is tournament host Germany who are expected to be a class apart from their group rivals.

Hungary and Switzerland are joint second favourites to win Group A at odds of 11/2 while Scotland are considered to be the least likely winners of the group at 8/1 in the betting..

Euro 2024 Group A Tips & Prediction

Group A Winner

Germany will have the home crowd in their favour for as long as they’re in the tournament and while that puts extra pressure on them I reckon it’ll be the catalyst to drive them forward.

With stars like Gundogan and Musiala, they should be more than good enough to win the group with 3 wins from 3 games.

Group A 2nd Place

I’m going for a shock here with Scotland, despite them being the least fancied of the four teams in the group and having not been in the best of form in 2024.

With that said,, they have a strong spine with the likes of Robertson, Tierney, McTominay and co and have shown they can shock the big boys with their win over Spain during qualifying. Scotland to finish runners-up in Group A would be my pick.

Group A 3rd Place

Hungary have been in strong form recently and have some very good footballers in their ranks. However, I’d be concerned about their lack of experience against stronger sides, and I think they will finish 3rd.

Group A 4th Place

Switzerland have plenty of big tournament experience in their squad and won’t be an easy game for anyone because of it. Despite this, I think their overreliance on ageing stars will be their downfall and will see them finish bottom.
