Wondering what to say at a Super Bowl party? Well, then this is the perfect post for you as we'll have you sounding like an expert in no time!

Super Bowl Sunday is fast approaching with the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs going head-to-head. There are a lot of you out there who are going to be attending Super Bowl parties but aren’t too familiar with the sport of American football.

Well fear not because in this post you will learn exactly what you can say to sound like you are an NFL expert! Most importantly just remember to have fun, it’s a party after all and nobody is going to be testing you on your American football knowledge.

These phrases are best used to surprise those friends of yours who think you know nothing about the game.

What To Say Before The Game

Last Year’s Super Bowl

A quick reference to last year’s Super Bowl to show your fellow partygoers that you watched (even if you didn’t) and remember the big game last year is sure to impress. It will have them thinking that you have at least some idea of what you’re talking about when it comes to American football.

In case you’re wondering, the Los Angeles Rams beat the Cincinnati Bengals by three points in an entertaining game to win the Super Bowl last year.

What to say: “If this Super Bowl is anything like last year’s then we are in for a great game.”

Patrick Mahomes

Patrick Mahomes is the quarterback and star player for the Kansas City Chiefs. He wears the number 15 and you will be hearing A LOT about him throughout the night.

Mahomes is widely considered the best quarterback in football and will have been awarded the MVP award (award for the best player in American football this season) the evening before the Super Bowl takes place.

What to say: “Patrick Mahomes is an amazing quarterback but I’m worried that he will fall victim to the MVP curse. No player has won the MVP and the Super Bowl in the same season since Kurt Warner did it back in 1999.” Bonus points if you add “8 MVPs have played in the Super Bowl since then and each of them have lost.”

You can also say: “I don’t think that Mahomes will let his high ankle sprain hold him back from running for 20+ yards tonight.”

Jalen Hurts

Jalen Hurts is the starting quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles which, like Patrick Mahomes, means you will be hearing a lot about him during this game. Hurts is 24-years-old and has turned himself into one of the best QBs in the NFL thanks in large part to his ability to run with the football.

What to say: “I’m so happy to see Jalen Hurts become a star player and make it to the Super Bowl after being benched while he was in college. It’s such a great comeback story.”

You can also say: “Did you know that Jalen Hurts once squatted 600 pounds (272 Kg).?!” If your fellow partygoers don’t believe you then you can just google the video and show them.

Tom Brady

Tom Brady, widely considered to be the GOAT (Greatest of All Time) in the NFL, retired at the beginning of this month. Brady, now 45-years-old, won a record 7 Super Bowls and appeared in 10 Super Bowls in total.

Honestly, if you say the name ‘Tom Brady’ and include the term ‘GOAT’ in that sentence you gain instant credibility in regards to your NFL knowledge.

What to say: “It’s insane that Tom Brady won 7 Super Bowls. I don’t think anyone will ever equal his record. I guess that’s why he’s the GOAT.”

This Game Will Be Won and Lost In The Trenches

This one is an all-timer. If someone hears you say this line then they are immediately going to think that you are a bona fide NFL expert. The term ‘the trenches’ means the offensive line vs. defensive line battle AKA the big fat guys on each team lined up directly across from each other.

Casual NFL fans like to follow the ball during a play but what happens in the trenches can be even more important to deciding the outcome of the game.

What to say: “This game will probably be won and lost in the trenches which makes me think that the Eagles are going to win tonight.”

Super Bowl Stats & Trends

Making reference to some interesting stats and/or trends can really make you sound like an expert at your Super Bowl party. Here are some great ones to use:

  • What to say: “Did you know that the team wearing white has won 15 of the last 18 Super Bowls.” Context: In every Super Bowl one team wears white jerseys and the other team wears their home colours. The Chiefs will be wearing white in this Super Bowl.
  • What to say: “Did you know that in the history of the NFL, six QBs that led the league in passing yards have appeared in the Super Bowl. None of those QBs have ever won the Super Bowl.” Context: Patrick Mahomes led the NFL in passing yards this season.
  • What to say: “The team who are underdogs have won 7 of the last 11 Super Bowls.” Context: The Chiefs are the underdogs (barely) for this Super Bowl.

What To Say During The Game

Nothing

This is the most important advice of all. However, this isn’t a hard and fast rule. You are going to have to feel out the vibe of your Super Bowl party. Some parties will be more focused on the game while at others the game may take more of a back seat.

If in doubt err on the side of not speaking during the plays i.e when the ball has been snapped. But feel free to talk as soon as a play is over and up until the next play starts. The nature of American football is very stop-start which means that there will be plenty of time for talking throughout the evening.

What to say: Nothing, when a play is happening.

The Kelce Brothers

Travis Kelce, the star tight end for the Chiefs, and Jason Kelce, the star center for the Eagles, will become the first brothers to play against each other in the Super Bowl this Sunday night. This has been one of the bigger storylines heading into this game and you will undoubtedly hear about it during the game.

If you want to sound in the know then it’s probably better to mention this fun fact during the first quarter before it is covered by the commentary team.

What to say: “Did you know that Travis and Jason Kelce are the first brothers to play against each other in Super Bowl history.”

Establish The Run

This is an old classic. To ‘establish the run’ basically means for one team to have consistent success running the ball. The idea is that the team that establishes the run will find it easier to pass because the defence will have to commit more players to stop the run.

You’re going to want to use this pretty early in the game, probably during the first quarter.

What to say: “If the Eagles can establish the run then the Chiefs will be in a lot of trouble in this game.”

Pressure The Quarterback

This is another classic and you will definitely hear the commentators on multiple occasions throughout this game talk about the pressure on both quarterbacks. Basically, getting pressure on the quarterback is really important for each team’s defence.

If either defence doesn’t get pressure on the other team’s QB then they will probably struggle to stop the other team scoring points.

What to say: “The [insert name of team that is losing] defence needs to get more pressure on the quarterback or the other team is going to continue to move the ball on offence.”

Time In The Pocket

This goes hand in hand with the ‘pressure the quarterback’ phrase. The big fat guys you see in front of the quarterback are called his offensive line and they block for him so he has time to pass the ball.

The ‘pocket’ is the space that a quarterback is given by his blockers to pass the ball. If that space is closed quickly by the defence then the QB is not getting much time in the pocket and the offence will struggle as a result.

What to say: “If the Chiefs offensive line can give Mahomes time in the pocket then I think Kansas City will win this game.”

War Daddy

Yes, this is a real term in the NFL. The term ‘war daddy’ is used to refer to a player that is both really talented and shows incredible toughness on the field.

‘War daddy’ is most commonly used when talking about players on the offensive or defensive line. You wouldn’t really hear it used too often when talking about players who play other positions.

The one problem you might run into when using this term is that it is quite esoteric so even a lot of the more hardcore NFL fans won’t be familiar with it.

What to say: “That Jason Kelce guy is a real war daddy. Just such a tough football player.” Say this only when the Eagles are on offence or it will seem random.

If someone asks you what ‘war daddy’ means, say “It’s a player who’s both really good and incredibly tough.”
