How Portugal Qualified For Euro 2024
Portugal qualified for the tournament in perfect form winning 10 out of 10 from their qualification group games against Slovakia, Luxembourg, Iceland, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Liechtenstein. They finished 8 points clear of runners-up Slovakia.
The Portuguese scored a staggering 36 goals during qualifying, while at the same time only conceding 2 goals.
Head Coach – Roberto Martinez
Portugal have been managed by Martinez since he took the reins on the 9th of January 2023 replacing Fernando Santos. Following that appointment, it has gone as close to perfect for both parties as possible after a 3–2 win over Slovakia marked their quickest qualification to a major tournament in their history.
Martinez, whose teams tend to favour a possession-based style, has previously found varying degrees of success at Swansea, Wigan, Everton and Belgium. However, his record managing Portugal suggests that this is the best fit yet for him winning 11 of his first 12 games losing 1 for an unprecedented win rate at the helm of 91.67%.
Players to Watch
Star Player – Cristiano Ronaldo
How could it be anyone else? 206 Caps and 128 Goals later for his national team and he is still very much ageing like a fine wine having recently turned 39 in February of this year! While the move to Manchester United ended with sour grapes and heartache for plenty of parties, since the Saudi move to Al Nassr he’s shown himself to be far too good for that level with 36 goals and 12 assists in 38 matches this season at club level.
Ronaldo can still do it at the International Level too following a poor 2022 where he only scored 3 goals in 12 games. In 2023 he was back to his best, scoring 10 goals in 9 games for his country.
Could this be the last tournament for Ronaldo? Surely? Time will tell, but I’m sure he will want to add to his Euro 2016 title before potentially hanging up his boots one last time.

Breakout Star – João Neves
The latest Portuguese star making waves in European Football is Benfica midfielder Neves who despite being only 19 has already been capped 5 times for his country while his performances in Portugal have him already linked with European Elites like Man United and Barcelona.
But what type of player is he? João has already found himself playing in a Defensive Midfield role something usually entrusted to players who are in their mid-twenties and early thirties not mid-teens which is a testament to his maturity.
Neves is a brilliant passer, attempting 78.90, completing 88.1% and making 7.01 of them progressive per 90 which put him respectively in the 98th, 91st and 88th percentile for all midfielders. Not only that though, he is proficient in all qualities needed in defensive midfield from tacking 3.00 per 90, blocks 2.02 and aerials won 1.66 putting him in the 92nd, 97th and 84th percentile per 90.
It's clear to see that he’s attracting the interest of so many clubs across Europe and if he performs well at Euro 2024 a big move could very well be on the cards.
