Poland v Austria Preview
Poland’s Form
Poland qualified for Euro 2024 following their playoff Group A victory, when they demolished Estonia 5-1 in the Semi-Final before overcoming Wales 4-5 on penalties following a 0-0 draw in the final. However, they were lucky to have had the playoffs after placing third in their original qualifying group behind the Czech Republic and Albania.
Following their playoff successes over Estonia and Wales respectively their form has shown signs of picking up momentum ahead of Euro 2024. During their pre-tournament friendlies, they won two from two matches first 3-1 against Ukraine and then 2-1 against Turkey, albeit both came under home comforts. In their first game of the tournament, they lost 1-2 against The Netherlands despite taking the lead in the 16th minute.
Poland has been managed by Michał Probierz since he was appointed on the 20th of September 2023. During qualifying the Poles experimented with several formations from 4-2-3-1 to 4-3-3 there was a clear desire to try and find something that clicked. Eventually settling on a 3-5-2 in the back end of 2023 and the start of 2024

Austria’s Form
Austria qualified for Euro 2024 by finishing runner-up in their qualifying group being ousted to the top spot by Belgium by 1 point following a record of 6 wins, 1 draw and 1 defeat. That run of results came against the aforementioned Belgium as well as Sweden, Azerbaijan and Estonia. They scored 17 goals and conceded 7.
Their form in 2024 has continued on a positive trajectory with two friendly victories in their March friendlies defeating Slovakia 0-2 and having a ruthless 6-1 victory over Turkey. Ahead of the tournament, they had a 2-1 victory against Serbia and a 1-1 away draw against Switzerland. In their opening fixture at Euro 2024, they fell to a narrow 0-1 loss against the French, but their overall performance suggests they have big claims to getting out of the group.
The current man in the dugout Ralf Rangnick was appointed as Austrian manager on the 29th of April 2022 on a two-year deal. Austria tend to favour a flat-back four in a 4-4-2 formation with that occasionally changing to a 4-3-3 and a 4-2-31 more recently in 2024.

Key Players To Watch
Piotr Zielenski – Poland
Ahead of the Pole's first game against the Netherlands, I suggested in my pre-game preview that Napoli midfielder Zielinski (30) could have a huge tournament ahead of him. In their opening game of the tournament, he Captained them and assisted their sole goal which is no surprise due to his 4.1 Shot Creating Actions and 3.95 Progressive Passes Received in the 92nd and 82nd percentile for all midfielders
Expect him to be the key provider to the returning Lewandowski for this game.
Marcel Sabitzer – Austria
With Captain David Alaba (31) missing the tournament through injury, Marcel Sabitzer (30) will have the task of stepping up the leadership role as Captain at Euro 2024 this summer. Sabitzer is a very versatile footballer capable of several different midfield roles.
His 0.25 Assists and 2.52 Touches in the Attacking Penalty Area are in the 94th and 91st percentile for all midfielders. Following a quiet opening game for him against the French he will be expected to step up to the plate for this match.
Poland v Austria Prediction & Best Bet
Prediction: Poland 0-2 Austria
Poland may have lost their lead and eventually the game late against The Dutch in their opening fixture, but they remain a difficult side to beat and the return of Lewandowski for this game will be a massive boost to their group credentials.
Austria were very impressive in their opening game against France at Euro 2024 and had the run of the ball gone their way, it’s not salacious to suggest that they could’ve gotten at least a point against France.
This is a huge game for both sides, but I feel Austria have the edge and could put themselves in a brilliant position to get out of the group with a win against Poland on Friday.
Best Bet: Austria Win + Under 3.5 Total Goals @ 17/10
