Spain v Italy Preview

Spain’s Form

Spain qualified for the tournament in close to perfect fashion following a record of 7 victories and 1 defeat from their 8 group games, with their only loss coming 2-0 against Scotland. However, they still finished 4 points ahead of The Scots in second place. They scored 25 goals across those qualification games and had a watertight defence with only 5 goals conceded in 2023.

Their form in 2024 could be considered progressive after initially losing 0-1 against Colombia in March which was followed by a 3-3 draw against Spain. However, their warm-up friendlies went even better (albeit against weaker opponents) with a 5-0 win against Andorra and a 5-1 win against Northern Ireland. However, that form was brought into their opening victory 3-0 against Croatia.

De la Fuente has managed Spain since he was appointed on the 8th of December 2022 as head coach of the Spain national football team following the resignation of Luis Enrique when they were knocked out of the 2O22 World Cup Round of 16 on penalties by Morocco.

Since taking the helm for Spain he has guided them to a strong record of 11 wins, 2 draws and 2 defeats for a win rate of 73.33% and a Goal Difference of +32.

Italy’s Form

Italy qualified for Euro 2024 by finishing runners-up in their qualifying Group 6 points back of winners England and only coming ahead of Ukraine by goal difference following their 14-point tally against England, Ukraine, North Macedonia and Malta. During qualifying they scored 16 goals and conceded 9.

In 2024 their form has been stronger than it was during qualifying. They had two victories in their March Friendlies coming 1-2 against Venezuela and 0-2 against Ecuador. Ahead of this tournament, they drew 0-0 against Turkey before beating Bosnia 1-0/. Their opening game of Euro 2024 was a 2-1 comeback victory against Albania.

Luciano Spalletti was appointed as manager on the 18th of August 2023 following the unexpected resignation of Roberto Mancini. He has since managed them to a record of 7 wins, 3 draws and 1 defeat from 11 games with a win-rate of 63.64% for a goal difference of +11.

Italy during their qualifying campaign almost exclusively used a 4-3-3 formation. However, they switched to a 3-4-2-1 for their March friendlies and even trialled a 4-2-3-1 against Turkey before the tournament and they used that in their opening game against Albania. Overall this Italian side are very tactically flexible both between games and during games which will be a tool in their arsenal against Spain and for their tournament campaign.

Key Players To Watch

Nico Williams – Spain

When somebody speaks about the “coincidental” Spanish Footballer, one usually thinks of a midfielder who is comfortable in the Tika-taka style of short passing and movement, working the ball through various channels, and maintaining possession.

However, with Williams (21) who plays his club football with Athletic Club, they have a footballer who offers something quite different to a usual Spanish squad member. Williams is a traditional winger who likes to cut inside with his electric pace and showstopping skill making him very different to the usual Spanish threat while also capable of linking up for the stereotypical Spanish build-up.

However, despite Spain’s impressive opening victory, Williams had a quiet game against Croatia so it will be interesting to see if he gets the nod for this one or if he will be favoured as an impact sub.

Nico Barella – Italy

Inter Midfielder and Captain Nico Barella (27) is in his prime and will be a huge part of how they play both in attack with 8.08 Progressive Passes Per 90 in the 94th percentile. Barella put in a brilliant performance in their opening 2-1 win over Albania getting on the scoresheet but also making 105/108 passes (97%) winning 3/5 duels (60%) and having 1/1 successful dribbles (60%).

Spain v Italy Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: Spain 2-1 Italy

While I remain unconvinced that this Spanish side is anywhere near the level of consistent quality compared with their sides of yesteryear their 3-0 win against Croatia shows they’re still a serious threat for Euro 2024.

Reigning Euro 2020 Champions Italy overcame the Albanian challenge in their opening game to win 2-1 and continue their stronger form in 2024. Like Spain, they have quality players from back to front, although I think if it comes down to the benches they look considerably weaker than the Spaniards.

Spain have had the better of Italy in recent games and I think this pattern will continue albeit with a narrow win and an entertaining game.

Best Bet: Spain Win + Under 3.5 Goals @ 17/10
