Denmark v England Preview

Euro 2024 Group C Table

England lead the way in Group C on 3 points after their opening-round win against Serbia on Sunday. Denmark, their opponents in this game, are 2nd on 1 point after their draw with Slovenia.

A win for England here would virtually guarantee qualification through to the knockout rounds.

Denmark’s Form

Denmark opened the tournament with a draw against Slovenia with a 1-1 draw. The Danes would have been disappointed with that result after taking the lead early on thanks to a finish from Christian Eriksen. Slovenia, despite being dominated in the possession stats, held in and grabbed an equaliser in the 77th minute through Erik Janza to earn a share of the spoils.

Despite the draw, it was a decent performance from Denmark, as evidenced by the expected goals where they had 2.07 to Slovenia’s 1.09. With that said, major tournaments are about results and not the xG stats so they’ll know that they need to be clinical this time around against England if they are to have a chance of getting a result.

England’s Form

England began their Euro 2024 campaign with a 1-0 win over Serbia. Despite the win, it’s fair to say that there are more questions than answers around this side after what was an uninspiring performance. Star boy Jude Bellingham was on hand to head home from a deflected cross with 12 minutes on the clock and the feeling was that the Three Lions would push on from there.

Instead, they struggled to create chances with just 0.52 xG created over the course of the 90 minutes. Serbia will feel themselves hard done by to not have got anything out of the game and from an English perspective there is a feeling that lingers that they don’t know what their best formation and personnel in attack is.

Phil Foden, who played centrally for Man City this season on his way to winning the PFA Player of the Year, was forced out to the wing to make way for Bellingham to play at 10. Foden failed to impact the game from out wide and this has again led to many English fans calling for manager Gareth Southgate to drop Real Madrid talisman Bellingham deeper to make space for Foden at 10. It will be fascinating to see what XI Southgate opts for this Thursday evening.

Denmark v England Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: Denmark 0-1 England

I am predicting that England will beat Denmark by a goal to nil in what could be a very cagey match.

If you compare the squads and starting XIs then it’s obvious that England are the far more talented side. However, this Denmark side has some talent of its own with the likes of Man United’s Rasmus Hojlund up front and Christian Eriksen in midfield. More importantly, they are a very well-drilled side at the back that function well as a unit. This should see England struggle to create chances in this game although with Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden around I think they’ll manage to find the goal they need to earn a win.

Best Bet: England win 1-0, 2-0 or 2-1 @ 6/4
