Phil Bardsley: Eyes Misfits Boxing “I Would Step Into The Ring With Anyone”

Boxing Ring

Speaking exclusively to BoyleSports, ex-Manchester United defender Phil Bardsley gives his thoughts on KSI vs Bridge being cancelled, flirts with a Boxing bout plan and speaks about his memories of Cheltenham Festival plans being scuppered by Martin O’Neil.

KSI vs Wayne Bridge Cancelled

Wayne Bridge is a great guy, and I think he would’ve given KSI a hell of a fight. How KSI acted was a bit out of order, I think in the ring Bridgey would’ve shown that he is no mug.

That stuff in the ring was ridiculous, I don’t like the insults and trying to sell the fight that way, look at the following KSI has, you don’t think he needs to do all that stuff do you. I think if Bridgey got in there with him, he would’ve fancied himself massively.

Bardsley Eyes Misfits Boxing

I would step in there with anyone, including KSI. I had an operation recently, but it won’t take me long to get my fitness up when I’m back in the gym. I’d love to give it a go and I think I’d really enjoy the routine of it, it’s something I’d really look forward to.

I’d never turn down a fight on one of the Misfits cards, but it’s not in my nature to go out there promoting myself. Let’s see what happens.

O’Neil Scuppers Cheltenham Festival Trip

When I was at Stoke it was more Chester races than Cheltenham, but when I was at Sunderland there was one occasion in which we were in a bad run of form, but we hired two helicopters from a local golf club to take us to Cheltenham.

We trained in the morning and were going to head down there, but Martin O'Neill, who was the manager at the time, found out and pulled the plug on it. So we had two nine-seater helicopters going to waste, we offered the golf club the use of them if they had any members that fancied going to Cheltenham with a free trip waiting for them on the 18th.

It was probably the right thing to do from the manager, but sometimes these trips can galvanise you and get you going again. So it was one of those things. We had to let two helicopters go, which was a big shame.

Six Alex Ferguson Loves Cheltenham

Sir Alex Ferguson had the elite mindset of not wanting players at Cheltenham during the week if it was around a matchday or even if there was a game coming up at the weekend. If you were ever spotted at a meet without permission you’d end up in his office with a nice juicy fine.

Nowadays he’s a household name in racing too and he has been known to drop a few decent tips off for the lads. I’d imagine he’ll be down there this year, and I hope he gets a few winners, he’d love that.
