Kerry v Galway Preview
Kerry’s Form
Kerry came into this 2024 campaign following a season last year which saw them initially finish 5th in Division 1 of the National League with a record of 3 wins and 4 defeats. That was followed by a Munster Championship victory after easily dispatching Tipperary in the Semi-Final 0-05 to 0-25 and Clare in the final 0-15 to 5-14.
They topped their All-Ireland Series group despite being defeated by Mayo at home in the opening round 0-17 to 1-19. They defeated Cork and Louth in the next two games to end up topping the group and advance to the Quarter-Final. They would then beat Tyrone 2-18 to 0-12 and Derry 1-17 to 1-15 to reach the All-Ireland Final. However, Dublin proved too good on the day, winning 1-15 to 1-13.
Kerry have been solid in Division 1 this season with 4 victories and 2 defeats from their 6 games following 109 points scored and 100 conceded. So strong has been their form that they have a chance to qualify for the league final if things go their way at the weekend.
Kerry’s Path to the Division 1 National League Final
(1) If Kerry draws with Galway they’ll need Dublin to lose to Tyrone to make the National League Final.
(2) If Kerry, Derry and Dublin all win, Kerry and Dublin would be tied on 10 but Dublin would qualify due to their win against Kerry.
(3) Kerry and Dublin win and a Derry loss would lead to a three-way tie on 10 points and given Derry’s and Dublin’s points difference advantage (+16 and +19), Kerry would be unlikely to qualify.
Galway’s Form
Galway comes into this 2024 campaign following a season last year which saw them finish 2nd in Division 1 with 4 victories, 2 draws and 1 defeat. They would ultimately lose 0-14 to 0-11 to Mayo in the Division 1 National League Final.
In the Connacht Football Championship, they won their opening semi-final against Roscommon 1-09 to 1-13 away from home before dispatching Sligo in the Connacht Final 0-12 to 2-20.
In their All-Ireland Group, they came 2nd behind Armagh but in front of Tyrone and Westmeath with a record of 2 wins and 1 loss. They were then drawn against Mayo in the preliminary quarter-finals. Despite home advantage, Galway would bow out of the Championship after a 1-point loss to their Connacht rivals.
Galway are battling on the other end of the table in this league campaign. Following a record of 2 wins, 1 draw and 3 defeats with 81 points scored and 94 conceded they are in 6th place ahead of only Roscommon and the already relegated Monaghan going into this final round of fixtures. However, Galway have faith in their hands knowing that a win (or a defeat for Roscommon against Derry) will see them remain in Division 1 next year.
Kerry v Galway Head-To-Head
Both sides played each other for the first time in 1913 with Kerry winning out 1-8 to 0-01 in the 1913 All-Ireland semi-final. It was considered to be one of the biggest rivalries in Gaelic games during the 1960s.

Key Players To Watch
David Clifford
It couldn’t be anyone else, could it? The two-time Footballer of the Year is inarguably one of the most gifted footballers in decades and at 25 looks on a collision course to cement himself as one of the “greats” if he continues on this trajectory.
Last weekend he was Kerry’s top-scorer with a total of 0-6 although it could’ve been even better with one of those points coming from an uncharacteristically wayward penalty.
Johnny McGrath
With Galway plagued with injuries from top to bottom in their side with Sean Kelly, Matthew Tierney and Shane Walsh all injured a new star has emerged in Caherlistrane clubman Johnny McGrath at cornerback.
McGrath has been rock solid at the back for Galway this campaign and will be huge for them in stopping Clifford and company come Sunday.
Kerry v Galway Prediction & Best Bet
Prediction: Kerry 1-16 Galway 0-13
Kerry have improved on their league form from last season and go into this weekend's game with a chance of reaching the League Final.
On the other hand, injury-plagued Galway have struggled for form and while it is less likely that it occurs they face the outside chance of relegation to Division 2 at the weekend.
Kerry should be too good for Galway and will run out comfortable winners in my opinion.
Best Bet: Kerry Win 4-6 Points @ 11/4
