BoyleSports Irish Coursing Derby Favourites

Five O Five - 6/1

The red-hot favourite for the 2025 BoyleSports Irish Coursing Derby is Five O Five trained by Dan O’Connor from Scartaglen.

Five O Five the son of Watchman and Highland Kathy was a beaten semi-finalist in the Galway & Oranmore TS on debut in October. He would go on to book his place for Clonmel at Mallow Coursing winning the Derby Trial Stake where he overcame runner-up Cherrywood Bruce during week five of the Coursing season with keen-eyed viewers immediately earmarking the dog as one with clear ability.

At the end of last month, the dog enhanced its superb reputation when winning the Patsy Byrne Memorial Corn Na Feile Puppy Derby at the Club grounds in Abbeyfeale. On the way to that success on the final day of the event, he overcame Challenger Deep (half a length), and Stickmein (1.5 lengths) to book its place in the final. Five O Five had an electric start in the final breaking ahead on the hill to beat Ballymac Loral by a length.

The Abbeyfeale stake has a long tradition of high-quality winners with last year's Ballymac Sports going on to win the Derby. It’s no surprise that Five O Five is the 8/1 favourite to repeat the feat at the weekend.

Five O Five to win - 6/1

Ashmore Express 7/1

The joint second favourite for the 2025 BoyleSports Irish Coursing Derby is Ashmore Express and is another member of the Ballymac Kennels and owner John Boyle having been backed in from odds of 10/1.

Ashmore initially lost out on a ticket for Clonmel in the Derby Trial Stake at Ballyheigue coming runner-up to winner Bobby Browne after a closely fought battle on the hill he made all to win by half a length in 10.80.

However that didn’t deter the team behind this white dog, he was back out to win in the Newcastlewest Derby Trial Stake last month in impressive fashion putting the early season disappointment behind them to land the all-important spoils.

The White Dog is bred in the purple out of the superstar sire Adios Alonso as well as Ballymac Enya who was an impressive winner of the Horse & Jockey Hotel Oaks in 2019. With breeding like that and the shrewdest team in the business behind the dog, he is a major player for success here.

Ashmore Express to win - 7/1

Montpelier Magic  7/1

The joint second favourite for the 2025 BoyleSports Irish Coursing Derby is Montpelier Magic who is Trained by Gerry Holian for the Jimmy Buckley-headed Top-Class Syndicate who has been cut from odds of 8/1

Montpelier Magic booked his place for Clonmel with an impressive victory at Castleisland Coursing from a strong field of dogs back in October which lad had four other Derby ticket winners across the island.

The Brindle dog is the son of Boylesportsmagic and Montpelier Lolly set the standard at the Newcastlewest Munster Cup before being withdrawn for the second round. There is certainly something magical about this dog and he heads to Clonmel with a huge chance of landing the big one!

Montpelier Magic to win - 7/1

Ballymac Hollow 7/1

Another joint second favourite for the 2025 BoyleSports Irish Coursing Derby is a member of the powerhouse Ballymac kennel, Ballymac Hollow who has also seen his odds cut from 8/1.

After a surprising defeat on debut at Castleisland, Ballymac Hollow booked his place for Clonmel during the Derby Trial Stake at Listowel last November showing plenty of power on the hill to beat Marvellous Hero by half a length in 9.96 having previously clocked 9.85 in his quarter-final victory clocking on bar with the Cup Dogs throughout the competition.

The Black dog and son of Fowhollow Adios and Ballymac Ismay was last seen on the field at the end of last month where he was narrowly beaten by Barrack Buttons in the Kingdom Cup Final.

The Ballymac Kennels are no strangers to this event having won it last year, and Ballymac Hollow looks to have all the gears to go close to success for the team again in 2025.

Ballymac Hollow to win - 7/1

Challenger Deep 10/1

Next in the betting is Challenger Deep who can be gotten at 10/1 for the 2025 BoyleSports Irish Coursing Derby for the team of trainer Kevin Barry and owner Paul Horig.

Challenger Deep booked his place for Clonmel at Kilsheelan Coursing winning the Derby Trial Stake and beating runner-up Delgado last November during which he clocked quicker than the Cup Dogs. He most recently ran at the Corn Na Feile at Abbeyfeale where it was narrowly beaten by Derby Favourite Five O Five in a quarter-final.

This fawn dog has plenty of gears and has run Five O Five close already, certainly one to keep in the notepad.

Challenger Deep to win - 10/1
