Countries With The Most World Cup Wins

6. Uruguay

Coming in at sixth place on our list is Uruguay. This might surprise many football fans, but the Uruguayans were once one of the powerhouses of world football. Uruguay have two World Cup wins to their name.

This is an incredible feat for a country with a population of only 3.5 million people. They won the world's most prestigious football tournament in 1930 and 1950.

Their first World Cup win in 1930 came when they defeated neighbours Argentina 4-2 in the final. They then went on to win the tournament again in 1950, after defeating another South American neighbour Brazil 2-1 in the final.

Uruguay is the only country on this list that have won the World Cup twice but has not won it since 1950. This country also has a recent track record of performing well at the World Cup after reaching the quarter-finals in 2018 by knocking out Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal in the last 16.

You also might remember the 2010 World Cup when they finished fourth. There was a lot of controversy in their quarter-final win over Ghana when Luis Suarez stopped a goal-bound effort with a deliberate hand ball which ended up helping the South Americans advance to the semi-final.

Uruguay are 50/1 to bridge the 72-year gap between their last World Cup victory in next month's tournament.

5. Argentina

Argentina is fifth on the list of countries with the most World Cup wins, with two championships. They won the tournament in 1978 and then again in 1986 with the help of the magician Diego Armando Maradona.

The Argentinians first World Cup win came in 1978, when they defeated the Netherlands 3-1 in the final. They then went on to win the tournament again eight years later in 1986, defeating West Germany 3-2 in the final.

Many of you might remember '86 as the year that Maradona scored the infamous 'Hand of God' goal which knocked England out of the World Cup at the quarter-final stage.

Argentina is one of the most successful countries in World Cup history, but they have not won the tournament since 1986. That is a long 36 year drought for one of the world's proudest footballing nations.

With the 2022 FIFA World Cup just around the corner, Argentines all over will be hoping that Lionel Messi can add to his legacy by lifting the Jules Rimet trophy in Qatar this December.

Our odds makers have Argentina at 13/2 to be the last team standing in Qatar.

4. France

France is the fifth country on the list of nations with the most World Cup victories with two tournament victories. They won the tournament in 1998 and most recently in the previous 2018 edition of the competition when they beat Croatia in the final.

The 1998 tournament was the first time that France lifted the Jules Rimet trophy as they were led by the classy midfield duo of Zinedine Zidane and Didier Deschamps. It was also the sixth and most recent occasion that the World Cup host nation won the championship.

France are the reigning champions going into this World Cup and they will feel they have every chance to repeat their success from 2018 with all the talent in the squad.

You can back France for the World Cup at odds of 11/2.

3. Italy

Italy is third on the list of countries with the most World Cup wins, with four championships. They won the tournament in 1934, 1938, 1982, and 2006.

Italy’s first World Cup win came in 1934, when they defeated Czechoslovakia 2-1 in the final. They then went on to win the tournament again in 1938, defeating Hungary 4-2 in the final.

After a 44-year drought, Italy won the World Cup again in 1982, defeating West Germany 3-1 in the final. The Azzurri then won the tournament for a fourth time in 2006, defeating France 5-3 on penalties in the final. You might remember that game for Zidane's crazy headbutt that led to a straight red card.

Italy will sadly be watching the 2022 World Cup from their couches as they failed to qualify after a shock loss to North Macedonia in the World Cup qualifiers.

2. Germany

Germany is second on the list of countries with the most World Cup wins, with four championships. They won the tournament in 1954, 1974, 1990 and most recently in 2014.

Germany’s first World Cup win came in 1954, when they defeated Hungary 3-2 in the final. They then went on to win the tournament again in 1974, defeating the Netherlands 2-1 in the final.

After a 16-year drought, Germany won the World Cup for a third time in 1990, defeating Argentina 1-0 in the final.

Their most recent World Cup victory in 2014 was one of the most iconic runs in World Cup history. They beat a talented French side in the quarters, then they shocked the world by beating hosts Brazil 7-1 in the semi-final. To cap their incredible tournament run off they went and beat Lionel Messi's Argentina in the final after extra-time.

Since the high of 2014 Germany have really struggled on the international stage. Their struggles reached a new low when they failed to qualify out of the group stages in the 2018 World Cup after a loss to South Korea sealed their fate.

Can the young, new look German 2022 World Cup squad restore this proud footballing nation back to the pinnacle of world football? Our odds makers have Germany at 10/1 to lift the trophy.

1. Brazil

Brazil top our list as the most successful country in World Cup history, with five wins. They have also competed in every single World Cup tournament, more than any other country.

Football is more than just a sport in Brazil, it is a religion and a way of life. For many, the Brazilians represent everything that is great about the game with their samba style of play and passion for the sport.

Brazil’s first World Cup win came in 1958, when they defeated Sweden 5-2 in the final. They then went on to win the tournament again in 1962, 1970, 1994, and 2002.

The 1970 Brazil side that won the World Cup featured legends such as Pele, Rivelino and Carlos Alberto. That 1970 team are regarded by many as the greatest team to ever grace a football pitch.

Brazil's most recent victory in 2002 is now twenty years in the past. A twenty-year wait will feel like a World Cup famine for this footballing giant.

The Brazilian national team is one of the most iconic in sports, and they are always a favourite to win the World Cup. You can back Brazil to add to their World Cup tally in 2022 at odds of 4/1.
