Wales need to win by four or more goals to qualify for the knockout stages of this World Cup.
The match against the USA was a completely different story altogether. Fans of the Three Lions went into the game expecting a win, but in the end they were lucky to avoid defeat. The United States were the better team throughout the game as they pressed England high and gave them little time on the ball. There are now question marks around whether this English team are real tournament contenders after that sluggish performance.
The opening draw against USA was largely viewed as a positive after the team bounced back from a poor first half to control proceedings in the second period. Wales were in a good position going into the Iran game, they were favoured to win and if they could have pulled that off then they would have looked likely to qualify.
Instead, they were deservedly beaten by an Iran team that were better on the day and to make matters worse their rivals for second spot in the group the USA got a surprise draw against England. Rob Page’s side are on the brink of elimination here and it would require an unprecedented performance to salvage this campaign.
Gareth Southgate’s side could only manage three shots on target over the course of the 90 minutes and never really created any great goal scoring chances against the US. A lot of England fans are calling on Southgate to start Phil Foden in this next match against Wales.
Honestly it is hard to understand why Foden hasn’t been starting in this tournament so far. The most likely explanation is that Southgate thinks Mason Mount gives the team a little bit more in terms of defence but with their attacking struggles in the USA game maybe the England manager will realise that Foden is what this team needs to unlock opposing defences.
Bukayo Saka is nailed on to start on the wing while Raheem Sterling will probably keep his starting spot on the other side too. Harry Kane is battling with a foot injury so there is an outside chance that he drops to the bench for this game. If that is the case then it will be interesting to see how Southgate shuffles the team around.
Against the USA they defended well with only one shot on target against them which unfortunately for the Welsh ended up in a goal. Wales need to win this game by four goals in order to qualify so they will have to throw caution to the wind here with their defensive gameplan.
I still expect Rob Page’s team to maintain their five-back defensive set up but you might see the full backs with much more of a licence to get forward and less of a focus on tracking back. Wales are really up against it here against these England forwards and the qualification situation, so things could get ugly here for the Welsh.
Bale will likely play on the right wing and will surely be instructed to stay forward rather than track back given the number of goals Wales need to score in this game. I think Kieffer Moore will play through the middle up front and Daniel James will be employed on the left wing as this team try to maximise chances from the counterattack.
Aaron Ramsey is the playmaker in midfield who will need to link up play between defence and attack for the Welsh.
I can’t envision any changes to this England defence as they have performed well so far at this World Cup. Against the USA this defence only conceded two shots attempts on target despite the team being outplayed in the other areas of the pitch.
For England I think Bukayo Saka to score anytime at 9/4 odds is appealing for the player who I think has been England’s best in this tournament so far.

How Each Team Can Qualify For The Round Of 16
England can guarantee themselves top spot in Group B with a win. A draw or a loss by less than four goals will ensure qualification for the knockout rounds.Wales need to win by four or more goals to qualify for the knockout stages of this World Cup.
The Form - Wales vs England
England’s Form
This England team have now played two matches at this World Cup and we have seen two very different performances. In the first game against Iran, England were dominant as they cruised to a 6-2 victory. Every attack looked dangerous and the forwards and midfielders were linking up well together.
Wales’ Form
Wales were struggling for form coming into this World Cup and the results haven't been any better since this tournament started. The Welsh are now without a win in seven games with their last victory coming against Ukraine in the match that earned them their spot at this World Cup.The opening draw against USA was largely viewed as a positive after the team bounced back from a poor first half to control proceedings in the second period.
How The Two Teams Match Up - Wales vs England
England’s Attack
This England team were firing on all cylinders in attack after their six-goal rout of Iran in their first game at this World Cup. Now, just a few days later things don’t look so good. A disappointing performance in the 0-0 draw against the USA leaves doubts around how good this England attack really is.Gareth Southgate’s side could only manage three shots on target over the course of the 90 minutes and never really created any great goal scoring chances against the US.
Wales’ Defence
Wales have been leaking goals in defence recently which is not typical for this side. Their five-back system is designed to limit opposition chances but it hasn’t worked out that way ever since they qualified for this World Cup.Against the USA they defended well with only one shot on target against them which unfortunately for the Welsh ended up in a goal.
Wales’ Attack
Gareth Bale is still the main man in this Wales attack, and he will need to produce an outstanding performance here as Wales attempt to do the unthinkable and beat England by four or more goals.Bale will likely play on the right wing and will surely be instructed to stay forward rather than track back given the number of goals Wales need to score in this game. I think Kieffer Moore will play through the middle up front and Daniel James will be employed on the left wing as this team try to maximise chances from the counterattack.
Aaron Ramsey is the playmaker in midfield who will need to link up play between defence and attack for the Welsh.
England’s Defence
England have employed a four-back system so far in this World Cup and they should stick with that in this game. Southgate has opted for a five-back formation in previous tournaments, but he seems happy with how the current system is working for his team.I can’t envision any changes to this England defence as they have performed well so far at this World Cup. Against the USA this defence only conceded two shots attempts on target despite the team being outplayed in the other areas of the pitch.
Wales vs England Prediction and Best Bet
For the best bet in this game I’m going with both teams to score in both halves boosted to 18/1 from 14/1. With Wales needing a four-goal victory this should see them set up in a very attacking manner which will also make them vulnerable in defence so I expect a lot of goal scoring opportunities in this game.Wales vs England Prediction - Goalscorer Betting Odds
Gareth Bale to score the first goal at 9/1 looks to be good value here as Wales will be going all out early to try and get the goals that they need to stay in this World Cup.For England I think Bukayo Saka to score anytime at 9/4 odds is appealing for the player who I think has been England’s best in this tournament so far.
