Ukraine v England - The Form

Ukraine’s Form

Ukraine are entering this match against England with indifferent form. Fom their four matches in 2023 they have two wins, one draw and one defeat. The defeat was their opening game of 2023 back in March where they lost to their opposition in this game England 2-0.

During the June International Window they managed a very respectable 3-3 draw against Germany. Although it could’ve been a lot better given the fact they were winning 3-1 until Havertz pulled one back in the 83rd minute before a late Kimmich penalty denied them a win.

Following that draw with Germany, Ukraine were unspectacular but got the results required to keep their qualification hopes very much intact. They beat North Macedonia 2-3 and later a rotated side secured a 1-0 victory against Malta.

That record puts them in second place six points behind England with one less game played and three points ahead of Italy with one more game played.

England’s Form

England have been a consistent force on the international stage over the last five years. Whether that is because of Gareth Southgate or despite him (I’d argue the latter).

The English have nevertheless in recent years finished fourth at the 2018 World Cup, runners-up at Euro 2020 and most recently a Quarter-Final appearance at the 2022 World Cup.

The Three Lions have been in impeccable form in 2023 with four wins from their four games scoring fifteen goals and conceding one goal. Those goals came in a 1-2 victory over Italy, a 2-0 win over Ukraine, a 0-4 win over Malta and most recently a 7-0 demolition of North Macedonia.

Ukraine v England Preview

Ukraine’s Tactics

Ukraine started their 2023 season playing against England where they set themselves up in a 4-2-3-1 formation. In that 2-0 defeat England created an XG of 2.08 to Ukraine's XG of just 0.11. The Ukrainians had 42% of the ball in that game.

However, since that game Ukraine have used predominantly employed a 4-4-2 formation. It will be interesting to see whether they stick or twist but with Zinchenko returning, I suspect I will be the latter.

Ukraine will have plenty of players familiar with the English players, so I’d suspect the majority/all (if available) of Mykolenko, Zinchenko, Yarmolenko and Mudryk to play crucial roles in this one. Especially, the pace and trickery of Yarmolenko and Mudryk on the break, given the fact you would expect England to dominate possession.

The key to any Ukrainian success against England will come down to the performances of Oleksandr Zinchenko both in and out of possession. While he could play more centrally against England, his stats at full-back speak for themselves.

Zinchenko's Pass Completion of 86.1% puts him in the 94th percentile, his 9.84 Progressive Passes P/90 in the 99th percentile and his 2.09 Aerial Won in the 97th percentile. The Arsenal man is a huge player for Ukraine to say the least.

England's Tactics

Everyone knows what’s coming from consistent Southgate. Albeit consistently unspectacular, his 4-3-3 formation has him with a record of four victories from four in 2023 and results are all that matters at the end of the day, (even if his detractors would have you think otherwise).

Southgate’s trusted foursome of GK: Pickford, RB Walker, CB Stones and CB Maguire are all certainties to start in my opinion unless there are late injuries. With Shaw unavailable for selection Chilwell should come in. There is an outside chance of Trippier filling in at LB however.

People are starting to realise (what I always knew) the fact that Trent was never a full-back but more of a midfielder. Having played there in Macedonia I would expect him to be given a chance there again.

Declan Rice, following his goal against Manchester United, will anchor the CM spot and the LCM spot will likely be taken by starboy Jude Bellingham who is in fine goal-scoring form at the start of his Real Madrid career..

Saka (RW) and Kane (CF) have those two forward positions on lock with only the LW spot up for debate. Rashford has been given minutes recently and with the withdrawal of Grealish, he should be nailed for that spot. However, I’m not convinced Southgate trusts him so wouldn’t be surprised to see Foden given a chance.

Ukraine v England Prediction & Best bet

Prediction: Ukraine 1-2 England

England should win this one, especially with the form Jude Bellingham is in right now. It was 2-0 in their home fixture, and I think it could be even tighter before they eventually win again.

Best Bet: Anytime Goalscorer Jude Bellingham @ 10/3
