The French Open is the second grand slam of the year and will be played from May 18-June 7 at Roland Garros in Paris.

Jannik Sinner is the clear favourite to win his maiden French Open title after last year's near-miss and, with chief rival and two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz out through injury, his closest challenger could be 38-year-old Novak Djokovic , a three-time winner in the City of Light.

Iga Swiatek tops the women's odds as she chases a fifth Roland Garros success in seven years while holder Coco Gauff , world number one Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina will also have expectations of glory.

French Open Insights

The French Open remains the only Grand Slam played on clay, a surface that slows the ball significantly and rewards endurance, footwork and heavy topspin over power. It is also the only Grand Slam to retain human line judges in 2026, with the Australian Open, Wimbledon and US Open all having shifted to electronic line calling.

Defending Champions

Men's singles: Carlos Alcaraz (Spain, two-time defending champion)

Women's singles: Coco Gauff (USA, first French Open title in 2025)

Sinner The Winner?

Sinner the winner?

Sinner needs the French Open to complete his grand slam singles collection following victories at the Australian Open (2024 and 2025), Wimbledon (2025) and US Open (2024), and he may still be wondering how last year's final against Alcaraz slipped through his grasp.

The Italian won the opening two sets and was serving for the championship in the fourth set, but Alcaraz staged a superb fightback to claim a 4-6 6-7 (4) 6-4 7-6 (3) 7-6 (10-2) win as he both defended his title and inflicted a first defeat on Sinner in major finals.

At five hours and 29 minutes long, it was the second longest grand slam final in history after the 2012 Australian Open showpiece, and saw Alcaraz record his fifth successive win over Sinner , a run that included the 2024 French Open semi-finals.

Unfortunately for tennis fans, they will not be renewing their rivalry in Paris due to Alcaraz's ongoing wrist injury, and with Jack Draper also ruled out with a knee problem, the list of players who can now stop Sinner from winning his sixth singles title of 2026 looks incredibly thin.

Djokovic may be approaching the end of his glittering career but he showed he can still compete at the highest level in reaching the Australian Open final in January, where he was beaten by Alcaraz .

The Serbian also knows what it takes to win at Roland Garros, lifting the title in 2016, 2021 and 2023, and he surely would have won many more French Opens but for the presence of 14-time champion Rafael Nadal.

● LIVE ODDS Novak Djokovic Outright Betting

Djokovic , whose last title came in Athens last November, is 12/1 to win the French Open while world number three Alexander Zverev is 8/1.

The 29-year-old German has never won a grand slam title but has been runner-up three times, at the US Open (2020), French Open (2024) and Australian Open (2025), and he may feel this will be his best chance to end that record.

Men's Prediction

Men's French Open Prediction: Jannik Sinner to Win @ 2/7

The Italian has won four Grand Slam titles in the past two seasons and only Roland Garros remains.

With Alcaraz absent and the rest of the draw lacking a credible challenger at his level on clay, the path has never looked clearer for Sinner to complete his collection.

Can Swiatek Be Stopped?

While the men's competition may seem like being a one-horse race, the women's event offers punters much more in terms of possible options, although Swiatek is set to be the player to beat again at one of her favourite hunting grounds.

The 24-year-old Pole, available at 9/4 , has won six grand slam titles in her career and four of them have come at Roland Garros, while she also claimed a bronze medal on the famous red clay at the 2024 Olympics.

However, the world number three is not the defending champion this year after seeing her hopes of a fourth successive title ended by Sabalenka in the semi-finals 12 months ago.

Who wins the 2026 French Open women's singles?

Four-time major winner Sabalenka was expected to follow up that win over Swiatek by lifting her maiden French Open but she came unstuck against Gauff in the final, the American fighting back to claim a 6-7 (5) 6-2 6-4 win for her second major.

Sabalenka , who has won titles at Brisbane, Indian Wells and Miami already in 2026, is 5/2 for victory in Paris while Gauff is 7/1 to win back-to-back French Opens.

5/2
● LIVE ODDS Aryna Sabalenka Outright Betting

Kazakhstan's Rybakina , who defeated Sabalenka in the Australian Open final in January, is 7/1 , while Mirra Andreeva is 10/1 and Elina Svitolina 14/1.

Women's Prediction

Women's French Open Prediction: Iga Swiatek to Win @ 9/4

Four French Open titles, a bronze medal on the same clay at the 2024 Olympics and a motivated bid to reclaim the title she lost to Sabalenka in the semi-finals 12 months ago.

The clay at Roland Garros is her surface above all others, and the market reflects a genuine contest with Sabalenka rather than the one-sided picture seen in the men's draw.
