We have a Spain v France prediction for you plus betting tips as we break down the odds, team news and matchups ahead of the first Euro 2024 semi-final.
Spain overcame tournament hosts Germany through an extra-time Merino goal to secure a late 2-1 win and to put them one game away from their first Euro Championship final since their victory at Euro 2012.
France were among the top two in the pre-tournament favourites, but despite their penalty victory over Portugal, they only find themselves third in the outright betting due to largely unimpressive and uninspiring performances throughout the tournament.

Spain v France Preview
Spain’s Form
Spain opened their 2024 campaign with a 0-1 defeat against Colombia and a 3-3 draw with Brazil during the March friendlies. However, since the turn of the summer football window, they’ve turned on the style with now 7 wins in their last 7 international games since June scoring 21 goals and having only conceded 2 goals
The Spaniards have been the strongest and most consistent side at Euro 2024 having been drawn in the “Group of Death” they commenced the tournament in flying fashion with a 3-0 victory against Croatia, which was followed by two 1-0 victories against Italy and Albania. They then continued their perfect tournament record coming from behind in the Round of 16 before they convincingly beat Georgia by a 4-1 scoreline.
In the Quarter-Final they were drawn against tournament host Germany and played out arguably the game of the tournament so far. They took the lead through Olmo in the 51st minute before Wirtz rescued the game in the 89th minute for Germany. However, with the game heading to penalties Merino channelled his inner Iniesta scoring in the 119th minute to book their Semi spot.
De la Fuente has managed Spain since he was appointed on the 8th of December 2022 following the resignation of Luis Enrique after they were knocked out of the World Cup Round of 16 by Morocco. His record in the job so far has been 15 wins (78.95%) 2 draws and 2 defeats from 19 games. Throughout Euro 2024 they’ve averaged 20 shots per game, 573.3% possession, 89.6% pass completion percentage and 14.6 aerials won.

France’s Form
France are an interesting case, having dominated their qualifying group their form has taken somewhat of a downturn. They won 50% of their matches at the start of 2024 losing 0-2 against Germany before picking up a thrilling albeit narrow one 3-2 against Chile. However, since the turn of June, they have had 3 wins and 4 draws in normal time.
Despite being one of the pre-tournament favourites (along with England) France have been less than impressive throughout the tournament opening it with a 0-1 win over Austria following a 38th-minute Wober own-goal. That was followed by unconvincing displays 0-0 against The Netherlands and 1-1 against Poland which meant they finished second to Austria in the group. In the Round of 16, their 85th-minute goal courtesy of Vertonghen was enough to earn them a 1-0 win over Belgium.
When France were drawn against Portugal for the Euro 2024 Quarter-Finals, plenty expected this to be an explosive match-up with Mbappé and Ronaldo taking centre stage. What transpired was an underwhelming game where Portugal failed to penetrate a French side who sat back and countered and after 120 goalless minutes, France pulled through 3-5 on penalties.
Didier Deschamps has been in charge of France since he was first appointed on the 8th of July 2012 and has brought them to a 2018 World Cup title, a runner-up finish in the 2022 tournament, a Nations League success in 20/21 and a Euro Championship runner-up at Euro 2016. Throughout the tournament, they have had 17.4 shots per game, an average of 52 % of possession and a pass completion percentage of.90.3% with 8.8 aerials won per game.

Key Players To Watch
Nico Williams – Spain
When somebody speaks about the “quintessential” Spanish Footballer, one usually thinks of a midfielder who is comfortable in the Tika-taka style of short passing and movement, working the ball through various channels, and maintaining possession.
However, with Williams (21) who plays his club football with Athletic Club, they have a footballer who offers something quite different to a usual Spanish squad member.
Williams is a traditional winger who likes to cut inside with his electric pace and showstopping skill making him very different to the usual Spanish threat while also capable of linking up for the stereotypical Spanish build-up. He got a goal and an assist against Georgia and I think he could terrorise this French side who invite pressure onto themselves.
The young Spanish star, who has been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona this summer, is a tempting 10/1 to be the first goalscorer in this semi-final and 8/1 to be named UEFA Player of the Match.
Kylian Mbappe – France
The man who almost single-handedly brought France to a World Cup at the last international tournament before coming unstuck to Messi. A lot is expected of the world-class attacker who has 48 goals in 83 games for his country. After only one group goal (a penalty against Poland) and having injury issues, French supporters and neutrals are still waiting for the “Mbappe show” to properly announce itself on the tournament stage.
If you fancy the masked Mbappe to be influential in this semi-final then you might be interested in the 5/1 odds on offer for him to be the first goalscorer and 9/2 odds on him being named UEFA Player of the Match.
Spain v France Prediction & Best Bet
Prediction: Spain 2-1 France
Spain have been the team of the tournament at Euro 2024 and they have done so while maintaining their stereotypical Spanish style of maintaining and controlling possession while also having dynamism and pace on the flanks in abundance.
France have talent from top to bottom in their squad and despite being less than impressive throughout they have the international pedigree and experience of winning games and tournaments that this current Spain team do not have (see their Round of 16 exit to Morocco at the last World Cup).
Expect Spain to control possession and France to play on the counter but I can see the former being far too consistent in their performance for France to trouble them in the end.
