The Netherlands opened their 2024 campaign with a 4-0 victory over Scotland which was followed by a 2-1 defeat against Germany. Ahead of Euro 2024, they had two comprehensive 4-0 wins first against Croatia and then against Iceland which made it 3 wins and 1 defeat from their opening 4 games of the year scoring 13 goals and conceding only 2.

In their opening game of the tournament, they came from one goal behind to beat Poland 1-2. That was followed by a 0-0 draw against France where if it wasn’t for some referee controversy they may have won the game. The Dutch then lost their final group game to Austria in a 2-3 thriller. England elected to commence their 2024 season with two difficult fixtures which ended in a 0-1 defeat against Brazil and a 2-2 draw against Belgium. Ahead of Euro 2024, they had a routine 3-0 win over Bosnia but were shocked by Iceland (again) losing 0-1 to take their pre-tournament tally for the season to 2 defeats, 1 win and 1 draw scoring 5 goals and conceding 4.

Throughout Euro 2024 England have been putting in sub-standard performances aplenty, struggling to a 0-1 win over Serbia and drawing 1-1 with Denmark. The media chatter continues to intensify and despite calls for Southgate to release the shackles and experiment against Slovenia, they put in another drab showing drawing 0-0 which ironically meant they won the group. They got over Slovakia in the Round of 16 by the skin of their teeth. Bellingham's 95th-minute equaliser sent it into extra-time where Kane’s 91st-minute goal proved to be the winner.

Ahead of their Quarter-Final with Switzerland the talk behind their game was generally they had the luck of the draw again and would surely turn on the style this time around. However, an Embolo goal in the 75th minute sent them into a short-lived nightmare scenario before Saka equalised in the 80th minute. Despite being less than impressive they held their nerve from the spot kicks with a 5-3 win.

Southgate was initially appointed as interim manager in 2016 but has held the position permanently since. Cody Gakpo – Netherlands

The Liverpool attacker (25) is having a brilliant tournament with the Dutch National Team with 3 Goals and 1 Assist from his 5 tournament ties so far. Gakpo is a tactically versatile footballer but has generally played on the LW so far at Euro 2024. He is an accomplished passer and finisher and also provides a high level of defensive contribution when out of possession.

Gakpo is 7/1 to be the first goalscorer in this game.

Kobbie Mainoo – England

England throughout this tournament despite reaching this stage have been a disjointed, dysfunctional mess with no coherent structure particularly stemming from midfield and by Southgate’s suggestion the lack of Kalvin Philips. Trent was trialled in midfield but proved wasteful, Gallagher provided energy but not much on the ball.

Mainoo was brought on for Gallagher against Slovenia and seemed to provide more balance to the team. It’s no surprise either considering the teenage sensation had already shown ability, maturity and composure beyond his years this last 12 months and already has experience helping to stabilise a dysfunctional midfield for his club.

Southgate in recent games has almost by accident stumbled on the Mainoo “solution” and they certainly look to have more balance and cohesion in the middle of the park when Mainoo is on the pitch.

The young Man United star is 16/1 to be named the UEFA Player of the Match.

The Dutch are an interesting case after getting out of the “Group of Death” they have seemingly gone from strength to strength and are the only side who haven’t needed extra time and/or penalties to reach this stage of the competition.

England are favourites for this game which is natural enough given the talent at their disposal. However, they need to step up their performance for this game with the Dutch players and English players relatively familiar with one another given club exploits.

The Netherlands have shown more promise with their performances, and I could see them winning the game against a conservative Southgate side in extra time.
