WORLD CUP GROUP STAGE FORMAT
The group stages of the World Cup are played in a round-robin format. This means that each team plays the other three teams in their group once.
The two teams with the most points from each group will qualify for the knockout stages of the tournament. If two teams are tied on points, then the team with the better goal difference will advance. If two teams are also tied on goal difference, then goals scored is used to decide who goes through to the knockout phase.
The winner of group H will play the second placed team in group G in the round of 16. Meanwhile, the second placed team in group H will play the winner of group G in the round of 16.

The Education City Stadium in Al Rayyan will host three of the games in group H. Meanwhile, the Lusail Stadium in Lusail, Ras Abu Aboud’s Stadium 974 and the Al Wakrah Sports Complex in Al Wakrah will all host one game each in the group.

WORLD CUP GROUP H PREDICTION
GROUP H WINNER – Uruguay @ 2/1
I’m going with the upset here because I think Uruguay can top Portugal for top honours in group H. These two teams are evenly matched but the value here is with the South Americans.
Let’s take a look at the form for Uruguay heading into this tournament. This team have played nine games in 2022 and they have won seven of those with only one loss and a draw.
This is an impressive run of form for the Uruguayans in the lead up to Qatar’s World Cup. To be fair, some of the team’s they’ve played are not World Cup standard, but you can only beat who’s put in front of you and they have done that convincingly this year.
In terms of World Cup pedigree, Uruguay have it in bundles. This is a small nation, but they have two World Cup victories to their credit. Now, those World Cup wins were 70+ years ago but they have still maintained a high standard in this competition since then.
Uruguay have qualified out of the group stages in five of the last six FIFA World Cups they have competed in. Included in this is a semi-finals appearance in the 2010 South Africa World Cup.
In 2018 the Uruguayans finished top of their group and went on to beat Cristiano Ronaldo’s European Champion Portugal side to advance to the quarter-finals stage. It was eventual champions France that knocked them out at that stage of the competition.
In this group I expect Uruguay to beat both South Korea and Ghana who they match up well against. The Portugal game will be the big one to claim the top spot and I fancy them to win that game.
Even if that Portugal game ends in a draw, I still trust Uruguay to take care of business against South Korea and Ghana more than I’d trust Portugal.
GROUP H 2ND PLACE – Portugal TO Finish 2nd @ 9/4
While I don’t think the Portuguese will win this group like many expect, I can’t see them doing any worse than second spot in group H. Given Cristiano Ronaldo’s age of 37 years old, this will almost certainly be his last World Cup. Let’s hope he can treat us to one more deep tournament run even if that starts with a second placed finish in group H.
The form for this Portugal team coming into the 2022 FIFA World Cup has been shaky to say the least. They only have five wins from their last ten games, three losses and two draws. Serbia topped them in their qualifying group from this tournament too.
The Portuguese don’t have the strongest record at the World Cup either. They have never won the competition with their best finish being 3rd place back in 1966. As mentioned before, the last time around in Russia’s 2018 World Cup, Portugal were knocked out at the quarter-final stage by Uruguay.
For the talent that is on this team I expect them to qualify from this group without too many problems. Uruguay look like a more consistent team and they’ve shown before that they have what it takes to beat Portugal. 2nd Place @ 9/4 for Portugal looks like good value here.
GROUP H 3RD PLACE – South Korea To FINISH 3RD @ 9/5
South Korea (also known as Republic of Korea) is where Tottenham star Heung Min Son plays his football on the international stage.
The South Koreans have struggled for form in the lead up to this World Cup. In their last ten games they only have a 50% win rate and most of these wins were against not the strongest of opposition. Recently, their form has been even worse with a 3-0 defeat to Japan, a 2-2 draw with Costa Rica and a narrow 1-0 win against Cameroon making up their last three matches.
This nation did once reach the semi-finals of this tournament back in 2002. It’s important to note though that they were the co-host of that World Cup which would have given them a significant boost. In the last four World Cups South Korea have been knocked out at the group stages three times.
In Russia’s 2018 World Cup they famously beat Germany 2-0 in the last group game but this still wasn’t good enough to see them qualify as it was their only points of that campaign.
I think this team are slightly better than Ghana but if they were to qualify from this group it would be a big surprise.
GROUP H 4TH PLACE – GHANA TO FINISH BOTTOM @ 11/10
Ghana look like they are destined to finish bottom of this group H table. They will struggle to overcome the gulf in class that the other sides have over them.
This team have won five of their last ten games but most of these wins have come against a lower quality of sides. Their most recent game against a team that qualified for this World Cup was when they matched up against Brazil and the Brazilians defeated them 3-0 convincingly on that occasion.
In terms of performances at the FIFA World Cup, Ghana don’t have a long record to go off of. They played at the tournament for the first time in 2006. That year they qualified out of their group and reached the last 16. In 2010 they even got to the quarter-finals only to be beaten by Uruguay after the infamous controversial handball by Luis Suarez.
There will be a lot of talk about the Uruguay vs Ghana game from 2010 when those teams go head-to-head this time. It is sure to make for an interesting plot line as Ghana will be looking for revenge in Qatar.
Unfortunately, I don’t think the Ghanaians will be able to avenge their 2010 World Cup heartbreak at the hands of Uruguay this time around. They have the least talent of all the teams and that will likely see them finish bottom of group H.
