We have a Portugal v France prediction for you plus betting tips as we break down the odds, team news and matchups ahead of this Euro 2024 quarter-final.

Portugal eventually overcame a Slovenian scare on penalties in their Round of 16 game, but their 3-0 penalty victory showed they do have that ruthless streak of getting over the line no matter what.

France were among the top two in the pre-tournament favourites, but their performances has seen them drift in the betting, that being said after beating Belgium 1-0 they are now only two wins away from another Euro final.

Portugal v France Preview

Portugal’s Form

Portugal were one of the in-form sides in Europe during qualifying for Euro 2024 they had a faultless record winning 10 out of 10 against Slovakia, Luxembourg, Iceland, Bosnia and Liechtenstein. In the process, they scored a staggering 36 goals during qualifying and only conceded. In March they had a 5-2 win over Sweden and lost 2-0 against France and during their pre-tournament games, they won 4-2 against Finland, lost 1-2 against Croatia and convincingly beat the Republic of Ireland 3-0.

Their Euro 2024 journey commenced interestingly when it took a Late Late Show performance against Czechia to win when Conceição scored in the 92nd minute to earn them a 2-1 win. That was followed by their latest victory 0-3 against Turkey which secured their passage to the knockout stages. For their final group game, a heavily rotated side lost 2-0 to Georgia. In the Round of 16, it took them penalties to overcome Slovenia following an extra-time penalty miss by Ronaldo, but they again found a way to win.

Martinez has managed Portugal since he took the reins on the 9th of January 2023 replacing Fernando Santos guiding them to 15 wins from his 19 matches in charge (in 90 minutes). Throughout the tournament, Portugal has averaged 18.3 shots per game 68.5% in possession stats with a pass completion percentage of 89.5% and 17 aerials won.

France’s Form

France dominated a relatively tough Euro qualifying group going unbeaten with 7 wins and 1 draw from their games against The Netherlands, Greece, The Republic of Ireland and Gibraltar. That record put them 4 points clear of the Dutch following their 29 goals scored and only 3 conceded. Following qualification, their 2024 started with a 0-2 loss to Germany and a 3-2 win over Chile. Before the tournament earlier this month, they beat Luxembourg 3-0 and drew with Canada 0-0.

Despite mammoth expectations on them for Euro 2024, they have been less than impressive during their group campaign. In their opening group game, a 38th-minute Wober own goal was enough in the end to see off Austria’s tough challenge 0-1. That was followed by unconvincing displays 0-0 against The Netherlands and 1-1 against Poland which meant they finished second to Austria in the group. In the Round of 16, their 85th-minute goal courtesy of Vertonghen was enough to earn them a 1-0 win over Belgium.

Didier Deschamps has been in charge of France since he was first appointed on the 8th of July 2012 and has brought them to a 2018 World Cup title, a runner-up finish in the 2022 tournament, a Nations League success in 20/21 and a Euro Championship runner-up at Euro 2016. Throughout the tournament, they have had 16.8 shots per game, an average of 56 % of possession and a pass completion percentage of.90% with 10 aerials won per game.

Key Players To Watch

Cristiano Ronaldo – Portugal

How could it be anyone else? While certainly in the “twilight” of his career Ronaldo (39) remains very much an active threat in front of goal at both club and international level.

Ronaldo has received plenty of criticism throughout the tournament for holding his side back having not gotten on the scoresheet yet despite notching an assist against Turkey and putting in some solid showings on the whole. In the Round of 16 tie against Slovenia, he broke down emotionally after missing a penalty in extra time, but he then stood up and scored the first spot kick on their way to a 3-0 win.

Write Ronaldo off at your peril, he remains one of the finest goal-scorers in World Football even at 39.

Kylian Mbappe – France

The man who almost single-handedly brought France to a World Cup at the last international tournament before coming unstuck to Messi. A lot is expected of the World Class attacker who has 48 goals in 82 games for his country. After only one group goal, a penalty against Poland and having injury issues, he performed well against Belgium, but you suspect there is a lot more to come from him.

Portugal v France Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: Portugal 1-2 France

Portugal found a way to get over the line against Slovenia and might be better suited to do well against a perceived stronger nation in France due to the big-game experience across their squad but a step up in performance is required.

It’s rather shocking that despite navigating their way to the Quarter-Final, France are a bigger price now than they were pre-tournament. That says a lot about their performances, but the squad still has plenty of world-class talent so can’t be discounted for Euro 2024 glory yet.

Another tight tie which could go either way, France might just do enough to get over the line though.

Best Bet: BTTS + France Win @ 9/2
