As we gear up for what promises to be an explosive Euro 2024, we have sat down to preview one of the tournament favourites, the Netherlands.

The Netherlands Euro 2024 Odds

The Netherlands have been handed odds of 16/1 to land Euro 2024. Those odds suggest that the country has a 5.9% chance of success in the tournament.

The favourites for Euro 2024 can be classified into three categories; “The Favourites” England at 3/1, France at 7/2 and Germany at 5/1. “The Chasing Pack” Spain and Portugal at 8/1 with Belgium at 14/1 and the “Outside Contenders” Italy and the Netherlands at 16/1 while Denmark and Croatia are the next best at 33/1.

The Netherlands’ Euro 2024 Group Odds

The Netherlands have been drawn into Group D and will be looking to double their Euro tournament tally after finding success in the competition back at Euro 1988. They will be joined by two-time winners France (1984 and 2000), and Austria who reached the Round of 16 at Euro 2020 and 2016 Quarter-Finalists Poland.

Favourites for Group D are France at 8/15, the Netherlands are expected to be the next most likely to win the group at 11/4. Elsewhere, Austria and Poland are expected to have an outside chance at 7/1 and 10/1 respectively.

How The Netherlands Qualified For Euro 2024

The Netherlands qualified for the tournament coming runners-up in their qualifying group with 6 wins and 2 losses from their 8 games against France, Greece, The Republic of Ireland and Gibraltar. During qualifying they scored 17 goals and conceded 7.

Head Coach – Ronald Koeman

Ronald Koeman– The Netherlands have been managed by Koeman since he was appointed for his second stint as manager on the 6th of April 2022 to commence the job in January 2023 after the World Cup. Koeman had previously managed his country from 2018-2020 and even worked as an assistant at the beginning of his career in 1997-1998.

However, despite being Nations League runner-up from 2018-2019 with his country his second stint commenced with a 4-0 defeat against France. He does have a slightly higher win rate of 58.33% after 7 wins from his 12 games in charge in his second stint which is marginally better than his 11 wins from 20 games (55%) from his first tenure at the helm.

Players to Watch

Star Player – Virgil van Dijk

The Dutch Captain and Liverpool defender van Dijk (32) might be turning 33 in July but he remains a crucial player for club and country and that won’t be changing come Euro 2024. While arguably not quite the athletic specimen he was at his “prime” he remains an elite defender whose positioning and aerial ability will make it difficult for any attack to bypass him and his defensive partners at Euro 2026.

His passing from the back will also be crucial to the Dutch style of play where he rarely if ever puts a pass wrong. He’s sure to add to his 66 caps in the summer and may even add to his 7 goals.

Breakout Star – Jeremie Frimpong

If Koeman is brave at Euro 2024, they’ve one arguably the best ace in the packs at the tournament with Jeremie Frimpong (23) who if afforded the opportunity in the summer could use his devastating pace and elite dribbling to add a real outlet for the Dutch even if he has only been capped by the Senior side twice so far.

Frimpong will enter the tournament coming off a brilliant season with Bayern Leverkusen where his statistics for the season Progressive Passes Received 12.93, 5.36 Progressive Carries and 3.38 Shot-Creating Actions 3.38 are in the 99th, 98th and 94th percentile for all fullbacks demonstrating his attacking threat.

However, while it’s his attacking qualities which will gather the majority of the attention, Frimpong is a competent defender with a strong work ethic to defend when needed. When accompanied by the right players who complement him, I don’t believe he would be a defensive liability for the Dutch.

His comfortability in possession and passing ability will also make him an option to link up with his teammates.
