We are taking a look at Italy Euro 2024 odds, fixtures and prospects as the defending champions aim to protect their title.

Italy Euro 2024 Odds

Italy have been handed odds of 16/1 to land Euro 2024. Those odds suggest that the country has just a 5.9% chance of winning their second successive Euros.

England are currently 3/1 favourites to land Euro 2024 and are closely followed by France at 7/2 and tournament hosts Germany at 5/1. The next most likely contenders are Spain and Portugal with both priced at 8/1.

Italy’s Euro 2024 Group Odds

Italy have been drawn into Group B which has been dubbed the “Group of Death” as they look to land their third success in the competition and second in succession following their Euro 2020 victory. They’re joined by three-time winners Spain (1964, 2008 and 2012), two-time Quarter-Finalists Croatia (1996 and 2008) along with Albania who have never been beyond the Group Stage.

Spain are 4/5 favourites to win the group, Italy are expected to be their closest challengers at 21/10 while Croatia despite their obvious qualities are 9/2. Albania are expected to be cannon fodder for the “European Elite” and are priced at 25/1 to land a shock group victory.

How Italy Qualified For Euro 2024

Italy qualified for the tournament coming runners-up in their qualifying group 6 points behind England with a record of 4 wins, 2 draws and 2 defeats from their games against England, Ukraine, North Macedonia and Malta. During qualifying they scored 16 goals and conceded 9.

Head Coach – Luciano Spalletti

Spalletti was appointed as manager of the Italian National Team in August 2023 following the unexpected resignation of Roberto Mancini. On the 9th of September 2023, Spalletti coached his first match for Italy, a 1–1 away draw in a UEFA Euro 2024 qualifying match against North Macedonia.

Spalletti throughout qualifying generally favoured a 4-3-3 formation, however, in 2024 this has been adapted into a 3-4-1-2 formation. He’s best known for his attack-minded football, tactical prowess and his ability to cultivate a positive team mentality and on the 15th of January 2024, Spalletti placed second in the 2023 Best FIFA Men's Coach award, behind winner Pep Guardiola.

He's managed Italy to 5 wins and a 62.50%-win rate from 8 matches so far but with such a small sample size, it’s difficult to see how suited he is to International Management just yet.

Players to Watch

Star Player – Nicolò Barella

The Inter midfielder (27) is very much coming into his prime with a record of 46 games, 2 goals and 7 assists (at the time of writing) for Inter this season where they have won the Serie A in dominant fashion and Supercoppa Italiana.

While Barella boasts decent attacking numbers for a Central Midfielder his game is far better judged in what he does all around the field capable in both attack and defence bringing a combative energy to any midfield he plays in.

Barella averaged 8.56 Progressive Passes, 4.29 Shot Creating Actions and 4.42 Progressive Passes Received which puts him in the 96th, 93rd and 88th percentile respectively. Those stats show how critical he can be to the Italian attacking effort. While Barella doesn’t have the strongest defensive numbers that is more down to the systems he plays in and sides who tend to dominate. During the later stages of the tournament if Italy get there you can expect him to play a more withdrawn back role.

Breakout Star – Destiny Udogie

Italy could end up bringing one of the oldest squads to Euro 2024 a feat not uncommon from an Italian side. However, with Tottenham LB Destiny Udogie (21), they have a potential ace in the pack in one of the most promising young full-backs in Europe.

The Italian International is a throwback left back who is consistently getting forward and taking on defenders, demonstrated by his 2.58 Attacking Penalty Touches Per 90, 1.12 Successful Take Ons and 3.24 Progressive Carries are in the 92nd, 79th and 9t0h percentile for all full-backs.

Udogie is also a strong defender though, with great defensive awareness to read the play and make interceptions and has great recovery pace in the tackle too. However, he’s been ruled out for the rest of the season with injury and with him fighting for fitness, there is no guarantee that he will get the opportunity to add to his 3 International Caps at Euro 2024.

*Udogie suffered an injury playing for Tottenham and his status is in doubt for Euro 2024.
