40th Care Referendum

Upcoming Irish referendums on family and gender are very much in the balance according to the latest odds at BoyleSports.

Two proposals to modernise language in the Irish constitution will be put to voters on International Women’s Day this Friday, and both were well fancied to pass when betting opened last week at hot odds of 2/5 (39th Family referendum) and 1/3 (40th Care referendum).

But there is growing concern within disability rights groups that the proposal to replace article 41.2 may have implications for those in need of care. The betting for the Care referendum has now flipped on its head, with a no vote now deemed more likely having backed down to odds-on at 8/13 from a high of 9/4.

The result in the 39th amendment to expand the definition of the family is also up in the air, with the odds on a no vote clipped into 5/6 from 7/4, meaning the betting has been squeezed to a 50-50 split.

Referendum Odds On Record Low Voter Turnout

The betting also puts a new unwanted record in the picture, with voter turnout backed at short odds of 5/4 with BoyleSports to slump to unprecedented levels.

Just 28.6% turned out to vote in the 1979 referendums on adoption rights and university representation in the Seanad, but the odds now suggest an even lower percentage could turn out to have their say on Friday.

Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BoyleSports said:

"The odds on the Care referendum in particular have swung significantly over the past week with a majority of punters now expecting a no vote, but the margins are as thin as could be if the betting patterns are anything to go by.”
