It’s Grand National day at Aintree, and all eyes are on the world’s most famous steeplechase. With the final declarations in and the runners heading to post, we’ve called on BoyleSports ambassador and former Grand National-winning jockey Robbie Power for his expert verdict.
Grand National Tips From Robbie Power
Senior Chief will love the ground and I think he could be well handicapped if he takes to the hustle and bustle of the Grand National. Minella Indo has been there before, done it before, he’s a fantastic horse. He’s won a Gold Cup, been 2nd in a Gold Cup. He’s a class horse. He is getting on in years, stats are against him but I can see him running a big race here.
There’s a huge Irish contigent, obviously I Am Maximus, last year’s winner, has to be respected. Top of the weights, it’s going to be a tough task for him. But I think Gavin Cromwell has got a very strong hand in this year’s Grand National. Stumptown, the cross country racing. Cheltenham is a great pointer towards the Grand National. He’s got a big chance.
With the drying ground, the way things are going, I think Perceval Legallois will travel strongly the whole way through this race. If I was having a few quid each way on something, Perceval Legallois for me.
Robbie Power on Winning the Grand National
It was fantastic! It’s the race that every jockey wants to win. It was a day like this, it was very warm. Beautiful sunshine, I think it was 25 degrees that day. It was a day I’ll never forget. We got a dream run around the whole way. You need luck to win a Grand National. We had plenty of luck. Horses fell in front of us. They fell out of our way and it provided a clear passage through. It was a big win that came at a good time in my career.
