Olympics Medals

In this post, we are taking a look at Ireland Olympic medals odds ahead of the games in France this summer.

The Irish have been a mainstay on the Olympic Stage since first competing at the Summer Games in 1924 and the Olympic Games since 1992.

Ireland is currently ranked 54th on the Olympic Medal Table with 11 Gold Medals, 10 Silver Medals and 14 Bronze Medals for a Total of 35.  The greatest Olympic Medal haul came at the 2012 London Games when Ireland won 6 medals, 1 Gold, 1 Silver and 4 Bronze.

Our greatest Medal performance at a single Games came in 1996 at Atlanta when Michelle Smith won 3 Gold Medals for swimming and 1 Bronze in swimming events.

Ahead of Paris 2024, Team Ireland are projected to win seven medals according to Gracenote, including two gold, three silver, and two bronze from our talented team of 116 competitors across 13 sports. That would surpass the record six-medal haul from London 2012, which included one gold medal for boxer Katie Taylor.

But what do the odds suggest? We take you through it below.

0 Gold Medals – 9/1

With the talented team that Ireland is set to bring to Paris 2024, it would be quite a shock if Ireland were to come home with no Gold Medals at odds of 9/1. Those odds imply a 10% chance that we will have no Gold Medals won for the first time since the 2016 Games.

This would be a very disappointing total for the Irish Olympic Team who will head into the event with strong Gold Medal claims especially in Athletics with the likes of Sophie Becker, Rhasidat Adeleke, Phil Healy and Sharlene Mawdsle leading a talented team following an excellent display at the recent European Championships. Athletics has produced the most Gold Medals for Ireland at the Olympics with four.

Another team which has served Ireland well at the Olympics is our Boxers, who account for more than 50% of our medals won in Olympic history. The Boxing Team will include reigning Olympic lightweight champion Kellie Harrington but this time Kellie is projected to win silver.

Exactly 1 Gold Medal – 10/3

Ireland are seen as having a 10/3 chance of landing 1 Gold Medal at the Paris Olympics implying a 23.1% chance of that bet landing for punters. The last time this event occurred was at the 2012 London Games when Katie Taylor won our sole Gold Medal.

This would certainly be a turn-up for the books and would mean the talented rowing duo of Paul O’Donovan and Fintan McCarthy would not retain their success in the Men’s lightweight double sculls from 2020. O’Donovan would also miss out on the chance to become the first Irish athlete to win medals in three successive Games (having won silver with his brother Gary in Rio 2016).

Exactly 2 Gold Medals – 15/8

Ireland are currently seen as having a 15/8 chance to win Exactly 2 Gold Medals at Paris 2024 which implies a 34.8% chance of the event occurring this summer. This would be a repeat of their performance at the Tokyo Olympics last time when Paul O’Donovan and Fintan McCarthy won Gold in the Men's lightweight double sculls and Kellie Harrington did the same in the Women’s lightweight Boxing event.

While the rowers are projected to land the Gold Medal again Ireland’s next likely Gold medalist is fancied to be Gymnast Rhys McClenaghan who is also predicted to win gold in the pommel horse. Rhys who hails from Newtownards is a back-to-back world champion since Tokyo and is hotly fancied to win the main prize at Paris 2024.

Exactly 3 or More Gold Medals – 6/5

Such is the talent in this Irish Olympic Squad that the odds are 6/5 that they win Exactly 3 or More Gold Medals at Paris 2024 suggesting a 45.5% chance. This would mean Ireland would at a minimum equal their best Gold Medal tally from the 1996 Olympics when Michelle Smith won 3 Gold and 1 Bronze.

However, Ireland are projected to win two Gold Medals at Paris 2024 in the Men's lightweight double sculls with Paul O’Donovan and Fintan McCarthy and the other coming with Rhys McClenaghan in the pommel horse. Where will our other Gold Medals come from?

We’ve mentioned our talented Athletics Team who will be riding off a positive European Athletics Championships high confidence along with the Boxing Team who always have strong Gold Medal aspirations, but is there anyone else?

Elsewhere Cian O’Connor who won Bronze in the Individual Equestrian event at London 2012 is projected to win silver this round, but could he go one better? Daniel Wiffen is also predicted to win silver in the 800m freestyle, and bronze in the 1500m freestyle but is coming in the Olympics in form following a double gold at the World Championships in Doha

In Golf, we have a talented team spearheaded by Rory Mcllroy who came close at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics to medalling. This time he is projected to win Bronze. Those are the main contenders for an Irish Gold Medal but who knows who could emerge from the Olympic pack this summer and make themselves an Irish hero?

Irish Olympic Medals Prediction

Ireland certainly have several strong Gold Medal aspirations coming into Paris 2024 and with a bit of luck I think we could be on course for our greatest Olympic performance ever with Exactly 3 or More Gold Medals @ 6/5
