Independent TDs are now being backed to go into government along with Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael with coalition talks set to resume on Wednesday.
Micheál Martin said today that talks over the formation of a new government will resume this week after stating that he is ‘ready to step up’ and form a government with Fine Gael given the scale of decisions required amid the ongoing Coronavirus crisis.
The chances of a coalition involving both parties and the Green Party were eased last week following Eamon Ryan's appeal to form a national unity government instead to tackle the crisis.
That has now been pushed out to an 11/5 shot from 6/4 last week, but remains right in the mix as the Green Party leader pledged to brief members on possible coalition options.
