Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso will want to head into the international break on the back of a good performance at unbeaten Brentford following last weekend’s setback against Hull. The Blues had won four of their opening five fixtures under Alonso but were frustrated by the promoted Tigers at Stamford Bridge and had to settle for a 2-2 draw.
It could have been even worse for Chelsea as they trailed with under 30 minutes to go, but Joao Pedro’s equaliser saved their blushes. Having seen his team booed off at half-time during last week’s home Carabao Cup clash against Leeds, Alonso will be desperate to give supporters something to cheer about on Friday night.

However, Brentford have form for vexing their West London neighbours and the last four clashes between these two at the Gtech Community Stadium have finished in draws. That is exactly how we think this week’s clash will go, with our opening Brentford vs Chelsea prediction being a score draw @ 16/5.

Form Guides

Brentford enjoyed an impressive maiden campaign under Keith Andrews, finishing ninth but just four points off the top six, and they are off to a good start this term. They kicked off with a resounding 3-0 win over big-spending Spurs and a 6-1 demolition of Birmingham in the Carabao Cup.

Since then the Bees have recorded three successive score draws in the league, against Leeds, Sunderland and Bournemouth, before seeing off Reading 2-1 on Tuesday night to reach the Carabao Cup fourth round. They don’t have much time to recover before Friday night but, with a three-week gap until their next fixture, they should be up for the London derby and we’re backing them to remain unbeaten.
Last season’s corresponding fixture finished 2-2, with Brentford snatching a last-gasp equaliser through Fabio Carvalho after Chelsea had fought back from a half-time deficit. It also ended 2-2 at the Gtech in 2024, Chelsea levelling late on that occasion, and you can get odds of 10/1 for the same scoreline this week.
Chelsea form guide
The start of Alonso’s reign has been entertaining and relatively successful in terms of results, with Chelsea finding themselves 6th in the Premier League table, but the former Spain midfielder would surely like things to be less manic. A 3-2 derby win at Fulham hinted at the rollercoaster ride to come, and that proved to be the case in Chelsea’s opening league game at Stamford Bridge, with Brighton edged out 4-3.
A tense 2-1 defeat at Arsenal followed as Chelsea failed to hold onto the first-minute lead given to them by Morgan Rogers, before nerves and patience were tested during last week’s cup win over Leeds. Booed off at the break and trailing 2-0 with 50 minutes gone, Chelsea somehow emerged 6-3 winners in a remarkable game at the Bridge.
Blues fans found themselves put through the wringer again in the Hull match, and we think there could be more frustration to come on Friday. One thing Chelsea have been consistent at is making fast starts, with Joao Pedro, Romeo Lavia, Pedro Neto and Rogers (twice) all netting early goals in the Premier League.
Therefore, Chelsea to be leading at half-time @ 17/10 is a solid option. It is also worth looking at Joao Pedro (9/2) and Cole Palmer (6/1) for first goalscorer. They scored in January's 2-0 home win over Brentford and have seven goals between them so far this season.
