In this post, we’re taking a look at the Euro 2024 Group D odds as we give you tips and preview all the betting and fixtures.

Teams In Euro 2024 Group D

France | Austria | Netherlands | Poland

France

Nickname: Les Bleus (The Blues)

FIFA Ranking: 2

Manager: Didier Deschamps

Previous Best Finish at the Euros: Winners (1984 and 2000)

Finish at Euro 2020: Round of 16

France dominated a relatively tough Euro qualifying group going unbeaten with 7 wins and 1 draw from their games against The Netherlands, Greece, The Republic of Ireland and Gibraltar. That record put them 4 points clear of the Dutch following their 29 goals scored and only 3 conceded.

Didier Deschamps is very consistent in his formation selected for France either utilising a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 formation variation. However, with the considerable depth that the nation has to choose from they have the players to play any formation they desire at the drop of a hat. It’s no surprise that they tend to dominate the opposition averaging 57.9% possession and 17.5 shots per game.

Captain Kylian Mbappé will be the main man for France at Euro 2024 and will be looking to add to his record of 46 goals in 77 caps, in the knowledge that he almost single-handedly guided them to the 2022 World Cup. Their unsung hero though is Eduardo Camavinga (21) who fulfils a vital role in the side whether that be in his natural midfield position or as an auxiliary RB. His ability on the ball combined with his defensive awareness makes him crucial to a very attacking side.

From player 1 to number 26, the French squad has very few glaring weaknesses in terms of quality. However, the one concern I’d have is the potentiality of a French squad imploding due to the high egos involved, However, to Deschamps's credit that has seemed a distant memory under his stewardship

Austria

Nickname: Burschen (The Boys)

FIFA Ranking: 25

Manager: Ralf Rangnick

Previous Best Finish at the Euros: Round of 16 (2020)

Finish at Euro 2020: Round of 16

Austria qualified for Euro 2024 by finishing runner-up in their qualifying group being ousted to the top spot by Belgium by 1 point following a record of 6 wins, 1 draw and 1 defeat. That run of results came against the aforementioned Belgium as well as Sweden, Azerbaijan and Estonia. They scored 17 goals and conceded 7.

Interestingly, under Ralf Rangnick one of the few consistent elements of their formation is playing a flat back four usually with Posch, Lienhart, Alaba and Mwene in a 4-4-2 with that occasionally changing to a 4-3-3 and a 4-2-3-1 more recently in 2024. They average 50.9% possession per game and 14.9 shots, but I’d expect both those statistics to fall considerably in this group against higher-quality opponents.

Crucial to their efforts at Euro 2024 will be Austrian Captain and Real Madrid defender David Alaba (31) who has already been capped 105 times scoring 15 goals for Austria. Alaba is tremendously versatile, fulfilling roles at LB and midfield, but in his advancing years he is likely to be positioned as a ball-playing LCB where he is an elite progressive passer. Another man to watch out for will be Dortmund midfielder Sabtizer who has 17 goals in 78 caps.

My primary worry with Austria is where the goals come from. Aside from Sabtizer, there is likely to be only a handful of players who have scored double digits for Austria in the squad this summer. Freiburg frontman Gregoritsch (30) has 8 in his last 10 for Austria and 12 goals for his club in 39 games this season. I’d be concerned if he can score against the “bigger” nations.

Netherlands

Nickname: Gli Azzurri

FIFA Ranking: 9

Manager: Ronald Koeman

Previous Best Finish at the Euros: Winners (1988)

Finish at Euro 2020: Round of 16

The Netherlands qualified for Euro 2024 by finishing runners-up in their qualifying Group with 6 victories and 2 defeats to come 4 points behind group winners France but ahead of Greece, the Republic of Ireland and Gibraltar scoring 17 goals and conceding 7. Ironically, they have been drawn against France again.

The Netherlands are likely to be set up by Koeman in a 3-4-1-2 formation or 3-4-3 with them occasionally utilising a 4-3-3. Across their most recent games, they have averaged 56.5% possession, completing 86.9% of their passes and taking 14.4 shots per game.

While this is far from a vintage Dutch side, they still have quality players from back to front at their disposal. Xavi Simons (21) is likely to pose their biggest attacking threat from either out wide or in attacking midfield following his 9 goals and 15 assists for RB Leipzig this season. They have a potential ace in the pack with wingback Jeremie Frimpong (23) who if afforded the opportunity in the summer could use his devastating pace and elite dribbling to add a real outlet for the Dutch.

The primary concern for the Dutch is not the absence of talent (despite the relative drop from recent tournaments). Instead, I’d point to the dugout with Koeman, compared to previous manager Van Gaal. Koeman could be considered tactically suspect and without the managerial ability to inspire this team to success.

Poland

Nickname: Orły (The Eagles)

FIFA Ranking: 28

Manager: Michał Probierz

Previous Best Finish at the Euros: Quarter Final (2016)

Finish at Euro 2020: Group Stage

Poland qualified for Euro 2024 following their playoff Group A victory, when they demolished Estonia 5-1 in the Semi-Final before overcoming Wales 4-5 on penalties following a 0-0 draw in the final. However, they were lucky to have had the playoffs after placing third in their original qualifying group behind the Czech Republic and Albania.

The Poles experimented with several formations during qualifying from 4-2-3-1 to 4-3-3 there was a clear desire to try and find something that clicked. Eventually settling on a 3-5-2 in the back end of 2023 and the start of 2024. They’re a physical outfit with 37 yellow cards from their last 20 matches, they win a lot of their aerial battles with 17.3 per 90 too.

It's no surprise their summer aspirations will be largely pinned on record goals-scorer Lewandowski who has 82 goals in 148 caps even if he’s now getting on at 35. Another key man for them will be Aston Villa RB Matty Cash who could be their main outlet to Lewandowski.

While Poland have some solid players, I’m not sure they will have enough to qualify from this group especially having underwhelmed in a relatively weak qualifying group originally.

France are worthy favourites to win the group at 8/15. The Dutch are well acquainted with France and are 11/4 to make that experience count on the big stage. Elsewhere, Austria 7/1 and Poland 10/1 aren’t considered likely to contend.

Euro 2024 Group D Tips & Prediction

Group D Winner

France are one of the favourites for the tournament and with good reason given the depth of quality in their squad. Netherlands may be no pushovers but they’ve already proved themselves to be operating on different gears to the Dutch during qualifying.

Mbappé could wreck at Euro 2024 and if he does, the trophy could be returned to France.

Tip: France to win Group D @ 8/15

Group D 2nd Place

While I’m usually a fan of Dutch sides having had some of the finest footballers and most underrated squads in recent memory, under Koeman, I am concerned that they could completely flop.

For me, they need to go bold with their selection at Euro 2024 unleashing Frimpong if they’re to pass further than the Round of 16.

Group D 3rd Place

Austria have some good players and on their day will pose a threat to the Dutch’s second spot in the final round of fixtures for the group.

But with a lack of goals in their side plus the overreliance on an ageing Alaba, I think they finish 3rd.

Group D 4th Place

Poland made hard work of qualifying, flattering to deceive in the groups before limping through the playoffs on penalties.

They need a mammoth few games from Lewandowski to stand any chance in Germany.
