Down’s Form
Down were undefeated on their way to topping the table in Division 3 on 13 points. They had 6 wins and 1 loss from 7 outings in the round-robin phase of this year’s National League.
Interestingly, that one blemish on Down’s otherwise perfect record came against this Saturday’s opposition after the two teams played out a 0-13 to 1-10 draw in Mullingar 2 weeks ago.
The last time we saw Down was against Clare last weekend. The Mournemen were impressive in a game they needed to win to ensure promotion to Division 2 and a spot in this weekend’s final. The final score was Down 3-15 Clare 1-10.
Westmeath’s Form
Westmeath finished the round-robin phase of Division 3 in 2nd place after 5 wins, 1 loss and 1 draw which left them on 11 points. That tally was good enough to secure Division 2 football for next year and give them a chance of winning silverware in Croke Park this Saturday night.
The Lake County’s one loss of their league campaign came against Sligo in the final round as they lost 1-14 to 0-11 in Markievicz Park. Last weekend’s defeat was concerning considering they needed a win to guarantee promotion although results elsewhere meant they did enough to be promoted to Division 2.
As mentioned earlier, they did draw against their opponents in this Division 3 decider during the round-robin phase of this competition. In a similar vein to Leitrim in the Division 4 final, despite underdog status, Westmeath will take confidence into this game knowing that they got a result against this opposition in recent weeks.
Down v Westmeath Prediction
Prediction: Down 2-12 Westmeath 0-11
The last time we saw Down in Croke Park was when they suffered a 5-point loss to Meath in last season’s Tailteann Cup Final. This squad will want to right that wrong by winning silverware this Saturday in headquarters. It is also worth noting that Down did beat Laois 8-16 to 2-12 in the semi-finals of that Tailteann Cup so they do also have some great memories here in recent times.
Westmeath have happy memories in Croker having won the inaugural Tailteann Cup there in 2022. Their loss to Sligo last time out does give cause for concern, however. Dessie Dolan’s side have been struggling to convert goals with only 3 goals in this year’s league. Down have had no such problem as they were the most clinical goal scorers in Ireland during the league with 14 goals, which is an incredible average of 2 goals per game.
I’m predicting that Down will have too much firepower for Westmeath in this game. The vast expanses of Croke Park should suit them perfectly and see them win this Division 3 Final with some comfort.
Best Bet: Down -3 @ 10/11
