Analysis

Clare have had a strong 2024 so far. They played their football in National League Division 3 this spring where they had a record of 5 wins and 2 losses from 7 outings. That total of 10 points left them in 3rd place. They had a chance of promotion on the final day of the league away against Down but were comprehensively beaten by the Ulster side which means they will once again be playing in Ireland’s 3rd division next year.

The Banner men had a bye to the Munster Semi-Final. At that stage they came up against Waterford, the bottom ranked side in the National League this year. Clare took care of business in a 14-point win although it’s hard to take much away from that result given the quality of opposition they faced.

It goes without saying that Kerry will be a massive step up in class from the opposition they have faced so far this season. They will be well aware of that having lost to The Kingdom in last year’s Munster decider. The final score in that game was 5-14 to 0-15.

Kerry’s 2024 Results

Kerry 0-18 1-12 Cork | Munster Semi-Final | Fitzgerald Stadium

Kerry 0-15 1-10 Galway | National League Division 1 | Fitzgerald Stadium

Roscommon 1-11 1-17 Kerry | National League Division 1 | Dr Hyde Park

Kerry 0-18 1-11 Tyrone | National League Division 1 | Fitzgerald Stadium

Dublin 3-18 1-14 Kerry | National League Division 1 | Croke Park

Kerry 0-16 0-15 Mayo | National League Division 1 | Austin Stack Park

Monaghan 1-12 3-15 Kerry | National League Division 1 | St Tiernach’s Park

Kerry 2-08 0-15 Derry | National League Division 1 | Austin Stack Park

Analysis

After a 2023 season that ended in All-Ireland Final defeat, Kerry bounced back with a strong spring in 2024.

Jack O’Connor’s side finished 3rd in Division 1 of the National League, just missing out on a league final appearance on the head-to-head tiebreaker with Dublin. They finished their league campaign with 5 wins and 2 losses with both of those defeats coming against the top 2 sides, Derry and Dublin.

The last time we saw The Kingdom was in the Munster Semi-Final against Cork. They went into that game as heavy favourites but the Rebels kept it a lot closer than what many would have predicted. Kerry’s experience and class proved too good down the stretch as they pulled away to win by 3 points.

They will want to put in a stronger performance in this game as the standard of opposition improves heading into the All-Ireland Group Stages.

Clare v Kerry Head-To-Head

Clare 0-15 5-14 Kerry | 2023 Munster Final | Gaelic Grounds

Kerry 3-22 1-11 Clare | 2021 Munster Quarter-Final | Fitzgerald Stadium

Kerry 1-15 0-12 Clare | 2019 Munster Semi-Final | Fitzgerald Stadium

Kerry 0-32 0-10 Clare | 2018 Munster Semi-Final | Fitzgerald Stadium

Kerry 1-18 1-12 Clare | 2017 Munster Semi-Final | Fitzgerald Stadium

Kerry have dominated this fixture both historically and in recent times. The Kingdom have won all 5 of the last 5 meetings between these sides with the minimum margin of victory being 6 points.

Clare v Kerry Prediction

Prediction: Clare 1-09 4-16 Kerry

I am predicting that Kerry will win this Munster Final comfortably. The Kingdom are operating at a much higher level than Clare and I think their attacking firepower will be difficult for Clare to deal with.

The big question in this game is the handicap and I would be backing Kerry to beat the 13-point handicap that has been set for them by the oddsmakers. Jack O’Connor’s troops will be wanting to make a statement after a lousy performance last time out against Cork.
