Aston Villa v Arsenal Preview
Aston Villa’s Form
Aston Villa were last season's surprise package under Unai Emery finishing 4th in the Premier League following a 68-point total while also reaching the Semi-Finals of the Europa Conference League. While it will be difficult to replicate that form in 24/25 they have bolstered the squad considerably with the signings of Maatsen, Onana and more so they won’t be an easy side to pick off again this time around.
London Stadium was their destination on the opening weekend and the task of dethroning a West Ham side who are also well fancied following a strong summer in the recruitment department. However, despite claiming a 1-2 win they didn’t have it all their way with 48% of possession and 2.03 XG from 14 shots compared to West Ham’s 14 shots and 2.46 XG so it could be argued that they were fortunate to come away with the 3 points.
After a less-than-convincing display against West Ham, they are back at home for this one but will need to step up their performance if they are to earn even a point against Arsenal.

Arsenal’s Form
Despite another “positive” season last year where they challenged even further for the league, Arsenal still ended the season trophyless (unless one counts the Community Shield). However, with Calafiori coming in to bolster the defence and a potential points deduction for Man City incoming, could this finally be the year for the Gunners?
In the opening game of their season, they earned themselves a 2-0 victory against a potential banana skin in Wolves. They had 53% possession and a total of 18 shots for an XG of 1.24 compared to their opponent's 9 shots and XG of 0.47 clinical finishing from Havertz and Saka gave them the win.
Arsenal didn’t earn a single point against Aston Villa last season so even a single point would put them statistically better off. However, a win is required to continue to set the statement ahead of another anticipated league challenge.

Key Players To Watch
Amadou Onana – Aston Villa
Aston Villa’s newest record signing following his £50 million move from Everton last month plenty was expected of the 23-year-old Belgian International. Onana is a physical force in the middle of the park as evidenced by his 2.29 Aerials Won and 3.28 Tackles per 90 putting him in the 95th and 94th percentile for all midfielders.
He showed his defensive qualities last weekend against Everton as well as getting on the scoresheet but will need to be critical to Villa’s challenge to maintain their recent run against Arsenal
Kai Havertz – Arsenal
Arguably Arsenal’s most underrated player, despite being the club's third-highest transfer fee when he signed from Chelsea in June 2023. Last season he scored 14 goals and provided 7 assists in 51 games, but he offers far more than just output. Havertz also offers great endeavour and defence from the front, which is critical to Arsenal’s style of play.
Despite his qualities more will be demanded of him this season and he started the season in perfect fashion scoring and assisting in a 2-0 win over Wolves. He will look to continue that flying form on Saturday.
Aston Villa v Arsenal Prediction & Best Bet
Prediction: Aston Villa 0-2 Arsenal
Aston Villa led by Arsenal’s former manager Unai Emery guided them to a league double last weekend and they can’t be discounted from getting a result again even with their poor display on the opening weekend.
The Arsenal hype train is very well underway in the media despite only one permanent signing to date. Whether they need more signings to truly challenge City this season remains to be seen but they can take a big early season step if they can beat Villa here.
Not expecting there to be lots of goals, but I do think Arsenal are due a win in this fixture.
Best Bet: Arsenal Win + Under 2.5 Goals @ 15/4
