England’s recent record in Australia does not make good reading, but there is a growing belief they can buck that trend this winter.
Since securing a memorable success in 2010-11, the Three Lions have had a trio of torrid tours Down Under, suffering 13 defeats in 15 Test matches, with the other two drawn. However, England can take great heart from the last meeting on home turf in 2023, when drawing 2-2 and dominating a rainy stalemate at Old Trafford.
If they can replicate that form against the old enemy in Australia, 2/1 for an outright England victory looks tempting from the 2025/26 Ashes Series odds.

What Will Win Be The Result In The 2025/26 Ashes Series?
Gabbatoir
Will Gabbatoir Decision Backfire?
The stage could hardly be better set for another epic encounter between cricket’s fiercest rivals as the Aussies sit on top of the ICC Test rankings and England are up to second, narrowly ahead of South Africa. Despite being clear at the summit, though, there is a general vibe that this Baggy Greens team is definitely beatable.
An ageing pace attack appears to be cracking at the seams, with notable injury concerns, while there just isn’t a formidable feel to a batting line-up which has been in transition. Giving up the ‘Gabbatoir’ factor for the first Test could also backfire as England have so often emerged from Brisbane’s cricketing cauldron both physically and mentally scarred.
If the tourists can fare better at Perth’s Optus Stadium, a relatively new venue with no Ashes history, they could build on that momentum, and 11/1 for a 3-1 away win takes the eye.
Stokes vs Cummins
Captain Marvel's Set For Battle Royale
Both Ben Stokes and Pat Cummins head into the five-match clash with fitness concerns, and whichever skipper can stay the healthiest could prove a crucial factor. Stokes has been sidelined since pushing his shoulder past the limit during another thrilling 2-2 draw against India this summer.
Cummins has been struggling with a back problem but is reportedly on course to return for the second Test. At this stage, Stokes is expected to play a more significant part in proceedings and is 10/1 to be named player of the series, with Cummins quoted at 16/1.
Zak Crawley
Crunch Time For Crawley
The only real debate about England’s batting line-up is whether Ollie Pope or rising star Jacob Bethell will get the nod at number three. Pope can boast nine Test hundreds but averages just 15.70 against Australia and faded after a bright start last summer.
Bethell burst onto the international scene a year ago and brings other assets to the table, notably electric fielding and left-arm spin bowling. Joe Root is 9/4 favourite to be the tourists’ leading run scorer, but none of his 39 centuries have come in Australia, and the value option in this market may be Zak Crawley at 7/1.
The Kent opener has been given plenty of leeway during a hit-and-miss period in recent years, but England believe he has match-winning potential on Australian pitches, and the 27-year-old has proved he can post big totals when on song.
Jofra Archer
Will Archer Hit The Target?
Rookie spinner Shoaib Bashir represents a big gamble by the England selectors, and the 22-year-old is in the unique position of being his country's number one at the same time as being a spare part in county cricket. It would be fair to say the main hopes for success in the pace department are hardly safe options either, with Mark Wood out of action since February, while Jofra Archer is only recently back from four years of injury problems.
However, both are capable of blitzing the Aussies by reaching speeds well beyond the 90mph barrier, and it is Archer who possesses the biggest upside in our book. The Barbados-born quick is finally performing at a level many thought he might never reach again and will be hoping to recreate some of the havoc from his 2019 Ashes debut, when taking 22 wickets.
Archer knows Australia well from his days in the Big Bash and has the ideal opportunity to get off to a bright start at pace-friendly Perth and Brisbane, so he is rated a worthy market leader at 9/4 in the top England wicket taker odds.
Nathan Lyons
Play The Long Game With Lyon Punt
There is definitely a familiar look to Australia’s bowling department, and it remains to be seen whether sticking with the old guard will pay off. As already mentioned, 32-year-old Cummins has to recover from a lower back problem and 34-year-old Josh Hazlewood had a late hamstring scare, putting pressure on Mitchell Starc (35) and Scott Boland (36).
However, while veteran pace bowlers are worryingly prone to suffering wear and tear during a tough Ashes series, there should be no issues with evergreen spin king Nathan Lyons. The ultra-consistent 37-year-old has 562 Test wickets to his credit, and all of that experience will come to the fore, especially if England do make a fight of it.
Examining the 2025/26 Ashes Series odds , there is appeal in 3/1 for Lyon to end up as the top wicket taker for Australia after some more favourable pitches later on.
Steve Smith
Smith still the key wicket for England
Having been stripped of the captaincy in 2018 due to a ball-tampering scandal, Steve Smith will be back as Australia’s skipper for the opening Test. Much has been made of the home side’s supposed batting frailties, but they can count on the ever-dependable Smith, who has been a stand-out performer in Ashes encounters since 2010.
The 36-year-old has 12 centuries in 37 Tests against England, with 3,417 runs scored at an average of over 56 and twice being named player of the series. Smith went 23 innings without a century between June 2023 and December 2024, but he has four in his last eight Tests and appears primed to be a thorn in England’s side once more.
Let’s finish off our Ashes Series betting tips by taking 7/4 for 'Smudge' to be Australia’s leading scorer.
