The name “Dante” Stakes is called after a man called Dante who was the Yorkshire-trained winner of the Derby substitute at Newmarket in 1945. The inaugural event was held in 1958 as a trial for the Derby and was won by Bald Eagle.
The present grading system was introduced in 1971, having initially been a Group 3 event, it was promoted to a Group 2 event in 1980.
Eleven previous winners have gone on to achieve victory in the Derby, the first was St Paddy in 1960 and most recently Desert Crown in 2022. The 2014 Dante winner, The Grey Gatsby, went on to win the French equivalent the Prix du Jockey-Club while the 2015 runner-up, Jack Hobbs, and 2021 winner Hurricane Lane, both won the Irish Derby.
The race is open to 3-year-olds exclusively and carry equal weight of 9-0 except any fillies who will get a 3lb allowance and any Group 1 winner who gets a 3lb penalty.
The overround for the 2022 event was 104% indicating a competitive betting market, the highest recent overround was 118% in 2016 while the average of the last 20 races has been around the 112%.
