Wolves v Newcastle Preview

Wolves’ Form

Wolves had a decent year last season, despite sacking Bruno Lage in October and a caretaker period for Steve Davis, Julen Lopetegui did a brilliant job when he came in back in November guiding them to thirteenth in the league as well as a Quarter-Final EFL Cup appearance. However, he departed the club in August by mutual agreement and Gary O’Neil has come into the club.

There were several notable departures during the summer with Neves, Moutinho, Collins and Jimenez all departing before the start of the season with not a lot of experience coming in plenty would’ve predicted a difficult season for the club. Wolves started the season with a spirited 1-0 defeat against Manchester United with Matheus Nunes starting in midfield. They followed that with a 1-4 defeat against Brighton and a 0-1 win against Everton.

However, Nunes departed for Manchester City for a “modest” £53,000,000 on the 1st of September to weaken them further and that was followed by a 3-2 defeat against Crystal Palace and 1-3 against Liverpool, plenty more were now predicting relegation.

But since their early-season struggles, they’ve found form with two draws and two wins in their last four games including a 2-1 win over Manchester City. Gary O’Neil deserves plenty of kudos for the job he has done so far.

Newcastle’s Form

Newcastle backed by wealthy benefactors are on a huge upward trajectory, fourth last season qualified them for the Champions League for the first time in the 2003/04 season when they were eliminated at the Third Qualifying Round Stage on penalties by Partizan.

It was always going to be interesting to see how they recruited to cope with the extra football this season. The only real departure in the summer was Allan Saint-Maximin and Chris Wood but they bought shrewdly with Barnes and Livramento strengthening the squad.

Despite impressively winning their first league game of the season 5-1 against Aston Villa, they lost their preceding three games albeit against Manchester City, Liverpool and Brighton the pressure was mounting on Eddie Howe early in the season.

However since that run of results, Newcastle have four wins and one draw in their last five league games scoring seventeen goals and conceding three, their most recent league game was a 4-0 victory against Crystal Palace at the weekend.

Newcastle played its third Champions League Group Stage game during the week but following a 0-0 against Milan and a brilliant 4-1 win over PSG they fell to their first defeat of the campaign 0-1 against Dortmund on Wednesday.
