Ireland should be at the World Cup in Qatar, according to an analysis of squad value for each team playing at the tournament.

Us Irish folk have been waiting since 2002 for a return to football's greatest stage at the FIFA World Cup. With 20 years now passed since Ireland's last World Cup appearance frustration is growing among Irish football fans and by one measure, this Ireland squad is good enough to compete in Qatar this winter.

Ireland Squad Better Than Some World Cup Teams

The Boys In Green would be the 26th most valuable country heading to the FIFA World Cup and they would boast a more valuable team than World Cup teams Costa Rica, Australia and tournament hosts Qatar.

Number-crunchers from BoyleSports have tallied up each World Cup nation’s squad value to determine where Ireland would rank among the 32 countries heading to Qatar. The data, from football analytics website Transmarkt, reveals that the Boys in Green would be ranked 26th out of the countries heading to the tournament.

Ireland have a squad market value of €112.50m - well ahead of the six least valuable nations, Canada, Tunisia, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Costa Rica, Qatar and Iran. Iran have the lowest squad value at just €13m, just under two million short of the tournament hosts Qatar.

Most Expensive Squads At The 2022 FIFA World Cup

England who are 7/1 to win the World Cup, boast the most expensive squad with Transfermarkt valuing the Three Lions at a whopping €1.26bn - €120m more than the second-most valuable side Brazil (4/1) and over 10 times that of the Irish squad used for their last international match.

2018 champions France, and joint second favourites at 11/2, take the bronze medal with Les Bleus valued at just over a billion, while Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal (14/1) are the fourth most valuable nation at €973m.

Interestingly, Wales boast a more valuable squad than Ireland, too. The Dragons are valued at €164m.

A spokesperson for BoyleSports said: “According to squad values, the Ireland squad should be boarding a plane to Qatar as we speak. The Boys in Green boast a €112m-rated squad, putting them well ahead of six other nations who are fortunate enough to compete on the biggest stage of all."

“The research suggests despite being 5th favourites in the betting, England boast the most valuable squad at the tournament. Only time will tell if Gareth Southgate’s billion euro rated men can put their money where their mouth is after all.”
