There is a problem with the way that the World Cup is constructed currently as almost half the nations competing in it are from Europe. There is also the issue that European teams make up ten of the top twelve teams in the FIFA world rankings so the fix might not be as simple as reducing the amount of European teams that can compete in the tournament.The solution that FIFA decided on is to increase the number of teams at the World Cup going forward. In the next World Cup hosted by the USA, Canada and Mexico there will be 48 teams at the tournament.This expansion is a massive one from the total of 32 teams that currently compete at the World Cup. Expansion isn’t a new thing for the World Cup, however. In 1998 the competition was expanded to 32 teams from a previous total of 24 teams.It will be interesting to see how the expansion goes in four years’ time.
