West Ham v Lille Preview
West Ham’s Form
Graham Potter, during pre-season, has experimented with his formations using everything from a 4-4-1-1, 4-3-3 and most recently a 5-3-2 in their recent win over Bournemouth. It’s clear to see that the manager is favouring a more tactically flexible side this season, with the arrivals of Walker-Peters and Diouf in particular leaving them more open to operate with wing-backs. The recent summer signing of Callum Wilson on a Free from Newcastle could be a shrewd move given his goal-scoring record.
The Hammers began pre-season on the 7th of July with overseas trips to Germany and the USA chosen as the bases. Their opening result of the summer was a 3-1 win over Grasshopper Club in Switzerland. They then flew across the Atlantic for the Summer Series, and after being narrowly beaten in their opener 2-1 by Man United, they bounced back with a 2-1 victory over Everton and a 2-0 win over Bournemouth. Three of the standout performers so far have been Nicolas Füllkrug with 3 goals in 5 games, Jarrod Bowen with 2 goals in 3 games, along with new signing Malick Diouf, who has shown fine athleticism across his games.
Last weekend against Bournemouth, we saw each starter get at least 70 minutes as we gear toward the start of the Premier League. I’d expect a similar side as last time out, with even fewer changes being made.
West Ham’s Last Five Results
Bournemouth 0-2 West Ham | August 3rd | Win
West Ham 2-1 Everton | July 30th | Win
Man United 2-1 West Ham | July 27th | Loss
Grasshopper 1-3 West Ham | July 19th | Win
Ipswich 1-3 West Ham | May 25th | Win
4 Wins and 1 Loss
Lille’s Form
Bruno Génésio is entering his second season with Lille and will be looking to build on the 24/25 season, where they fell from 4th to 5th place and were eliminated early throughout their cup competition, though in reaching the Champions League Round of 16, they took full advantage of the new format. There have been some considerable departures this summer, though, including Angel Gomes, Jonathan David and Gabriel Gudmundsson, who will all be difficult to replace.
There’s been more of a European feel to Lille’s pre-season approach, opening it with games in France where they were comfortable winners first 2-0 over Gent U23s and then 5-0 over Amiens. They then came out on the wrong side of a 3-2 defeat to Como in Italy and a 3-2 defeat to Dortmund in Germany, but most recently had a 3-0 win over Venezia in Belgium.
While there’s been a considerable level of talent who have departed the club this summer, there’s still plenty of names to keep an eye out for! Chevalier (23) is one of the best young keepers around. CB Diakite (24) and Bouaddi (17) are all among a contingent who could play at an even higher level in the future.
Lille’s Last Five Results
Lille 3-0 Venezia | August 6th | Win
Dortmund 3-2 Lille | August 2nd | Loss
Como 3-2 Lille | July 18th | Loss
Lille 5-0 Amiens | July 12th | Win
Lille 2-0 Gent U23 | July 8th | Win
3 Wins and 2 Losses

Players to Watch
Key Players To Watch
Malick Diouf - West Ham
The Hammer's summer signing to keep an eye out for is Senegalese International Malick Diouf (20), who signed from Slavia Prague this summer for £19 million. Malick is known for his very physical style of play, aggressive in his duels, with a strong work rate. His style should be well-suited to English Football, and his attacking prowess, crossing, pace and directness could be crucial for The Hammers not only for this game but for the new season!
Olivier Giroud – Lille
The Veteran Striker, who is set to celebrate his 39th birthday next month, is now a stranger to English Football following a 6-year stint with Arsenal from 2012-2018 and 3 years with Chelsea from 2018-2021. His cumulative record for both was 144 goals and 51 assists in 372 matches. Last season with LAFC, he scored 3 times and assisted 2 in 882 minutes; his effectiveness in front of goal remains despite his advancing years.
Prediction & Best Bet
West Ham v Lille Prediction & Best Bet
Prediction: West Ham 2-0 Lille
West Ham have looked impressive in pre-season and could be primed to cause a few shocks this season, especially with additions like Diouf, Walker-Peters and Wilson.
Lille are no pushovers and run a consistent ship in Ligue 1, so they can’t be underestimated in any game they play.
The Hammers look to be progressing nicely these last few weeks, and I think they’re well primed for a result in this game.
Best Bet: West Ham – 6/4
