West Ham v Everton Preview
West Ham’s Form
Graham Potter has been a manager who has excelled at being able to implement a fluid possession-based system that excels in delivering results, especially with teams that have fewer resources. The summer window has brought the Hammers some interesting acquisitions so far, with the signings of Todibo on a Full Transfer, along with the signings of Malick Diouf and Walker-Peters, will be welcome additions, but the big departure of Kudus to Tottenham will be hard to replace.
West Ham opened their 25/26 pre-season following a 1-3 win over Swiss side Grasshopper Club, following goals from Irving, Marshall and Paqueta. In that victory, they commenced the game with a 5-man defence in the first half before switching back to a 4 for the second half. In their latest 2-1 defeat to Man United, they persisted with their 3-4-2-1 formation; interestingly, the starting side played 70 minutes before changes were made. Though the middle of the park lacked ball progression, new signings Walker-Peters and Diouf looked promising.
Defensive lapses cost them against Man United, so given that they will be expected to hold more possession against Everton. It’ll be interesting to see how they can cope with the different counter-attacking threat posed to them.

Everton’s Form
David Moyes returned to the club where he made his name in an epic stint with the club from 2002 and 2013, last January, when he was tasked with steering his side away from relegation worries. The decision proved pivotal again, and he fitted back into the club like a glove, guiding them to 13th after an exceptional end to their season, where, since his return, they only lost 3 of their 19 games and won 7.
Since the return of Moyes at the beginning of the year, he has implemented a pragmatic no-thrills 4-2-3-1, focusing on compact defending and quick transitions to exploit counter-attacks. There’s only been 3 additions so far this summer, Argentinian midfielder Alcaraz from Flamengo, French CF Barry from Villereal and Irish Keeper Tracers in from Bournemouth. Their pre-season form has been poor so far, though with their 2-1 win over Port Vale, their sole victory from four matches.
A key inference to watch from Everton’s perspective is how effectively their midfield, likely led by Idrissa Gueye and Carlos Alcaraz, can counter West Ham’s high-pressing 3-4-2-1 under Graham Potter, especially after West Ham’s recent struggles with central progression and rushed possession against Man United.

Players to Watch
Key Players To Watch
Malick Diouf - West Ham
The Hammer's summer signing to keep an eye out for is Senegalese International Malick Diouf (20), who signed from Slavia Prague this summer for £19 million. Malick is known for his very physical style of play, aggressive in his duels, with a strong work rate. His style should be well-suited to English Football and in their latest pre-season game against Man United, for his attacking prowess, crossing, pace and directness.
Tim Iroegbunam - Everton
One name which has caught the eye of Everton supporters despite a poor pre-season so far has been former England U19 and U20 Tim Iroegbunam, who signed from Aston Villa last season, though he only made 18 appearances. A well-rounded midfielder, both technically and physically sound, noted for his ball-winning ability.
Prediction & Best Bet
West Ham v Everton Prediction & Best Bet
Prediction: West Ham 2-0 Everton
West Ham may have lost last time out against Man United, but the performances of the likes of Bowen, Diouf and Walker-Peters pre-season, if they can cut out the defensive mistakes, they have every chance of winning this game.
Everton have been busier this pre-season but have performed poorly and will be desperate for a good result in this game to flip the narrative more positively.
This will be a crucial litmus test to see where both sides are in their preparation, and I fancy West Ham to edge it.
Best Bet: West Ham – 7/5
