West Ham v Chelsea Preview
West Ham’s Form
West Ham had a solid 23/24 campaign under David Moyes reaching the Quarter-Final of both the EFL Cup and the Europa League. However, a 9th league finish was deemed not good enough and he was replaced in the summer by Julen Lopetegui. The transfer window saw them retain most of their core squad though some strong additions in the likes of Kilman, Wan Bissaka, and Todibo (on loan) so expectation levels remain high.
Despite a less than impressive 4 points from their first 4 games putting them 14th, it’s pretty much where they deserve to be at best with their Expected Points total of 3.39 would have them 15th on the table. Their recent 1-1 draw with Fulham away looked to be lucky with an XG scoreline of 2.89 to 0.68.
West Ham have a solid squad but expectation levels are a little high for them from supporters.

Chelsea’s Form
Chelsea had a strange 23/24 season, they reached the Semi-Final in the FA Cup, were runners-up in the EFL Cup and finished 6th in the Premier League under Mauricio Pochettino. However, while the final few weeks saw signs of significant improvement Mauricio was removed from his position and replaced by Enzo Maresca who was backed to the tune of close to £250 million in the summer, so the expectation level remains.
Enzo’s first 4 games at the helm has them on 7 points and in 7th position in the league albeit their sole defeat came against Man City. However, their Expected Points position has them only on 6.03 points and in 11th place suggesting they haven’t brought their late season form from 23/24 into 24/25 yet anyway.
This is a huge game for the early season context behind the club, a win puts them in a good position, but a loss could put the manager under a little of early season pressure.

Key Players To Watch
Aaron Wan Bissaka – West Ham
West Ham’s summer signing from Man United otherwise known as “Spiderman” is one of the most underrated RBs in World Football and has already impressed from the small sample size in the opening weeks of the season. He’s one of the best defensive RBs in the world with his 2.37 Interceptions and 3.19 Clearances in the 99 th and 92 nd percentile. His pass completion of 83.1% and 0.92 successful take-ons are in the 78 th and 71 st percentile also making him more complete than he gets credit for.
Cole Palmer – Chelsea
After signing for Chelsea from City last summer he had a sensational first year at the club being their shining light with 27 goals and 15 assists from 48 games in all competitions. For England, he has 2 Goals in 9 Appearances since debuting in 2023. He has picked up where he let off last season too with 1 Goal and 4 Assists from his first 6 games in all competitions. A player of immense quality and by far their biggest game-changer.

Chelsea are under who replaced their manager in the summer in somewhat of a harsh circumstance, Enzo was also significantly backed and will be expected to perform more consistently than his predecessor Pochettino.
