Speaking exclusively with BoyleSports , Manchester United legend Wes Brown has compared the signing of Matheus Cunha to a Sir Alex Ferguson-type signing.
The five-time Premier League winner has also given his insight into the importance of what this Man United squad needs to be revitalised and speaks candidly about Champions League ambition and player accountability leaning on his experiences.
Sir Alex Would’ve Signed Cunha Too!
Matheus Cunha is the sort of signing Sir Alex would’ve made, we know he can do it in the Premier League, and he also played really well against Manchester United, especially in the away game.
It’s a really positive signing for Manchester United, he likes to get on the ball, and he has a lot of personality. United need someone who can change games, that’s what they have been missing. You need a core of players that have Premier League experience, he knows how tough the league is, and the hope is that he continues to deliver.”
Players Must Be Professional
Manchester United players would’ve known about the tour for a while, if they had won the Europa League then they would’ve breezed through it.
That wasn’t the case, but the tour was organised and although players would’ve wanted to go on holiday after a really bad season, they had to be professional and go and get it done.”
Summer Key For Amorim
This is a huge summer for Ruben Amorim and Manchester United. The club needs to get players in and naturally, players will leave. I think Amorim wants three or four of his own players, there were two plans, and this will be the second after losing the Europa League final.
Some players, Amorim might want to leave but they will want their contract honoured, the money isn’t as deep as it could’ve been, but the signing of Matheus Cunha is a promising start.
Booing Players
You never want to hear booing, but I think it could be a good thing. It was hot but the standard wasn’t there, and it will hurt the players and inspire them to not let it happen again.
Everyone expected Man Utd to win both games, but they didn’t, now it is about taking a break and coming back stronger next season.
United Need The Champions League
Next season is going to be very tough, but the target for a club like Manchester United should always be to get into the Champions League. Looking at last season, you might think it isn’t possible, but the team has the summer to regroup and forget about last season.
United need to be playing in the Champions League and that should be the minimum target, regardless of how bad things were last season.
“No Chance” Of Man United’s Relegation
There is no chance of Manchester United going down next season, but if there was another team down there going toe-to-toe it could’ve been a different story last season.
It was disappointing and it's not really acceptable for the sort of players United have and the calibre of players, the standards need to be set a lot higher. But there is no danger of relegation next season.
Experienced Striker A Must
Manchester United need a striker who has goals and although Liam Delap might not get you 20 just yet, he is a great player and has all the attributes to be a success. Personally, having Rasmus Hojlund up front on his own looked very difficult for him, he got a lot of stick and looked to have no backup whatsoever.
He cannot be left in that position again because it’s not fair on him, Chido Obi came in who is another young player, but United have to get a striker this summer. Delap would’ve been a good player for United, but I’d go for experience.”
Evans To Manage Man United?
Could Jonny Evans be a future Manchester United manager? It’s happened before with Ryan Giggs, Michael Carrick and Ruud van Nistelrooy getting chances.
He has a calmness about him, and he has been a great servant to the club and a fantastic professional. If he wants to go into management then he will give it everything and I’d love to see it. Giggs, Carrick and Ruud have been in the hotseat, sometimes it just takes a bit of luck, and it will be a dream for all United players that go into management.”
Rashford To Barcelona?
Marcus Rashford is going to have to start playing really well wherever he goes, first of all. He's done well at Aston Villa; he's got his head back in the game. But he still has two years on his contract at United.
If he is looking to move, he would obviously want a big club and Barcelona would be ideal. But it's a lot of money. If the club is looking to get rid of him, they're probably wanting to get paid as well. It's not an easy one to sort out, talking from my heart, I think it would be brilliant if Ruben Amorim and Marcus could sort things out.
When he's on form, it's a player United have really missed. I hope they can sort it out in a way that everybody gets what they want. For Marcus personally, he just needs to get his head down and play some football now. Hopefully, this gets sorted out sooner rather than later.”
“Formidable” Potential In Rashford With Cunha
Marcus Rashford and Matheus Cunha could form a formidable partnership at Old Trafford; things can change very quickly in football. That could be a new dimension for the team, and it would be fantastic if things work out. Marcus in form would be fantastic for the club, but we will have to wait and see what he wants to do.
The truth is that the players have the power.
