Ahead of the 2025 Welsh Grand National, we’re taking a look back at past renewals of Chepstow’s festive period feature to help point us towards this season’s winner.
Future Gold Cup heroes such as Burrough Hill Lad , Cool Ground , Master Oats , Synchronised and Native River have lifted this trophy, along with Aintree Grand National aces like Rag Trade , Corbiere , Earth Summit , Bindaree and Silver Birch.
Recent runnings have lacked the same class, but let’s examine a few patterns that could give punters some clues to consider for Saturday.

LOW WEIGHTS HAVE HELD SWAY OF LATE
With conditions underfoot usually testing, it is no surprise to see that carrying a low weight can be a big advantage over an extended three miles and six furlongs trip that features 23 fences to be jumped.
Colin Tizzard ’s warrior Native River defied a welter burden in 2016 but 11 of the last 14 Welsh Grand National winners had less than 11st on their backs.

Young or Old?
HAVING TIME ON YOUR SIDE HELPS
There wasn’t a dry eye in the house when Raz De Maree famously prevailed as a 13-year-old in 2017 , while Mountainous and The Two Amigos have also come out on top after reaching double figures in the past decade.
However, a ratio of 17 winners in 21 years being aged eight or younger does mean that it is usually better to try and identify a rising star on the way up.
Going back to the 1980s , Corbiere , Burrough Hill Lad and Run And Skip all sneaked in under 11st as smart young prospects.

RECENT WINNING FORM IS A BIG FACTOR
Six of the last nine victors had also won last time out and that figure rises to seven when it comes to having already tasted success that season.
Boasting a course win is another plus, with 60 per cent of winners in the past decade having previously scored at Chepstow.
Not surprisingly, winners of the official Welsh Grand National Trial in the first week of December often go on to do well in the big one, with Nassalam , Iwilldoit and Secret Reprieve doing the double since 2020.
Older horses that buck many of the trends above do tend to have run well in the race before, with The Two Amigos and Raz De Maree going one better than previous runner-up efforts and 2015 ace Mountainous regaining the trophy he took home two years earlier.

All roads lead to 5/1 ante-post favourite JUBILEE EXPRESS being the stand-out candidate for 2025 Welsh Grand National glory.
He stayed on strongly to finish an excellent second to Val Dancer 12 months ago and still returns within the required age bracket as an eight-year-old.
Despite picking up a 4lb penalty for making all in the Welsh Grand National Trial last time out, Jubilee Express is currently scheduled to carry just 10st 3lb .
Trainer Sam Thomas struck in 2021 with Iwilldoit , who had a very similar profile that season and went on to be placed in two more renewals.
Thomas , who is based just 30 miles from Chepstow , said of Jubilee Express : “There’s definitely more to come, especially as he’s now a bit more battle-hardened and has been in some bigger races; he knows what to expect.
“I think that goes a long way when you’re going into these big races, they are well prepared and know what’s about to happen.”
He added: “We’re very proud Welshmen, being on the doorstep feels that bit more special. We love going to Chepstow and having runners; we’ve had a nice bit of success there over the years.”
