Wales v England Preview
Wales Form
Welsh Rugby is going through its toughest period since the 1980s and early 1990s aside from their Six Nations Championship success in 2021. They’ve declined rapidly since that success and at last year's Six Nations they earned the unwanted Wooden Spoon after losing all five of their matches for the second time in the Six Nations era (2003 too) finishing with only 4 points and a considerable 7 back of second from bottom Italy who they were defeated by 21-24.
They concluded their 2024 campaign with further defeats this time against South Africa and Australia last summer before concluding their 2024 with a defeat to Fiji and again to South Africa and Australia. In their opening match of the tournament, their miserable run extended to 13 defeats when a ruthless France side left them scoreless in a 43-0 demolition at the Stade de France and that was followed by a 22-15 defeat against Italy their third defeat against them in the last four meetings.
The Italian defeat was the nail in the coffin for Gatland’s second stint as Head Coach with his first being from 2007-2019 where he guided them to four Six Nations titles and two Grand Slams. In their opening game under Matt Sherratt who took interim charge, they put in a heartful showing against Ireland defying expectations but still fell to an 18-27 defeat.
Last weekend they put on another spirited display losing 35-29 against Scotland and even bettered the Scots Bonus Point total with 1 to 2. If they can earn a bonus or two at the weekend again or even manage a draw or win against England that might be just enough to avoid their second successive Wooden Spoon.
England Form
English Rugby is undergoing a transitionary period, but you get the sense that a side is starting to come together, and they will be a very serious outfit come the 2026 Six Nations Championship. Last year in this event they finished third following three wins and two defeats with the highlight being a dramatic 23-22 win over Ireland on St Patrick’s Day. The remainder of the year saw them being competitive against the Rugby elite but few victories to boast about either last summer beating Japan and losing to the All Blacks twice by 1 and 7 points respectively.
During the Autumn Series, they lost to New Zealand again 22-24, 37-42 to Australia and 20-29 against South Africa before concluding the year with another victory over Japan this time 59-14. They opened their 2025 Six Nations campaign against Ireland putting in a resolute defensive performance before being beaten 27-22 though the scoreline likely flattered them.
England are always a different animal at Twickenham, so their French test was always going to be interesting to follow. We were not disappointed with an exceptional English showing and an 80 conversion from Fin Smith giving them a 26-25 win against France. That was followed by a 16-15 Calcutta Cup victory which has kept them in Championship contention.
Last weekend they came out on the right side of a thriller against the Italians at Twickenham winning 47-24 and earning a bonus point win. A win in this game could give them an outside chance of an unlikely Six Nations Championship if France slips up against the Scots.

Key Players
Taulupe Faletau:– Wales
Welsh Rugby may be in the doldrums but there is a few glimmers of light and one of the best performers in their defeat against Italy was #8 Taulupe Faletau (34) who has represented Wales for over a decade debuting in 2011 and having played 105 times to date racking up 65 points.
Though he’s reaching the twilight of his career, he returned against Italy and put in a mammoth effort for his side putting in a shift in both attack and defence. He took that form into the Irish game again being their star performer displaying an extremely high work-rate in attack in defence especially considering his advancing years.
Against the Scots last weekend he was again among their better performers with 111 metres made from 15 carries as well as 19 tackles, though the majority of the carries came when the game was pretty much dead as a contest.
Fin Smith - England
The Northampton Fly-Half (22) may have been born to two Scottish parents but ahead of this game he’s declared that his loyalties and dream was always to represent England after being born in Warwick and growing up in the area, He realised that senior dream in 2024 and has already been capped four times.
Fin was their star performer in their victory against France with his restarts and grubber kicks causing them serious issues. He assisted the game-winning try and scored the conversion to nudge England ahead in the 80th minute. His form has continued throughout the tournament against the Scots with a penalty-winning shot and a match-high of 16 tackles and against Italy he controlled the game for the English.
Wales v England Prediction & Best Bet
Prediction: Wales 10-30 England
Wales have shown a degree of improvement under Matt Sherratt but know they will need a point or two from this game to ensure they have a chance of avoiding another Wooden Spoon.
England have been the tournament’s surprise package and a bonus point win in this game will put them in serious Championship contention.
I’m expecting a relatively low-scoring affair but with England having the significant edge.
Best Bet: England and Under 60.5 @ 6/4
