In this post, we look at the front runners to land the services of Sporting’s Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres who looks set for a big-money move this summer following a sensational season with Sporting where he scored 54 goals in all competitions.

Viktor Gyökeres Player Profile

A player with a fascinating, but not linear rise in football he started his career playing for Swedish side IF Brommapojkarna but his goal-scoring ability as a teenager caught the eye of usually shrewd decision-makers Brighton and he signed for the club in 2018.

However unremarkable loan spells followed with St Pauli and Swansea and even with Coventry though the latter saw enough to make the deal permanent before the 21/22 season and it turned out to be the best decision they would make scoring 40 times in 97 games after the permanent switch.

The trajectory didn’t stop there though and following his Championship exploits he earned a €20 million (plus futures clauses) move to Sporting. Here he’s gone to another level establishing himself as one of the best strikers in the world due to a staggering 97 goals and 28 assists in 102 games.

It’s clear that he’s endeared himself to the Sporting supporters.

Viktor Gyökeres Next Club Favourites

Arsenal -  5/6

Perpetual Premer League bridesmaids Arsenal have emerged as the early front-runner to be Viktor Gyökeres’s signature following reports of a “Gentleman’s agreement” with the club.

The Gunners are badly in need of someone who can put the ball in the back of the net following the 24/25 season where despite plenty of positives about their progression under Arteta they seriously lacked goals with their top-scorer in all-competitions Kai Havertz scoring only 15 times in 36 matches.

Gyökeres is a natural fit in the Arteta system and would be the closest thing the club could find when it comes to the prospect of buying “guaranteed goals” of those players currently available in the market.

Despite Sporting lowering their asking price to around €65m-€70m from a €100m release clause, the total cost, including a potential £7m annual salary and a signing bonus, represents a significant investment for the club who have historically been conservative in the market.

Everything makes sense about this deal though and that’s why Arsenal are seen as the front runners for his signature.

Chelsea - 9/4

Next in the betting to be Viktor Gyökeres’s next club is “spent happy” following rumours they’re in the market for another striker they’ve been touted as one of his possible destinations.

Chelsea are a very difficult club to gauge in terms of their “progress” but on the whole, the 24/25 campaign could be considered a positive one. A fourth-place finish in the Premier League means they will return to the Champions League next season and the Europa Conference League success will be a book moment in time in the progression of their “younger” players.

In their First-Team squad for the 24/25 season, Chelsea's central striking options were Jackson, Neto (mainly a winger) and Nkunku. With varying degrees of question marks about each of those players, it’s no surprise that they are in the market for another striker.

While it’s never a question of whether Chelsea have the means and willingness to fund a major move in the transfer market. With reports suggesting that Liam Delap looks set for a switch to the club, I wouldn’t be backing this move to happen at odds of 9/4.

Man United - 6/1

Another side who are seen as having an outside chance of being Viktor Gyökeres’s latest club is Man United who seem to be in a perpetual never-ending “rebuild” this last decade or so.

It’s not revolutionary to say that Man United have had an awful 24/25 season following their worst-ever Premier League finish (15th), they weren’t even able to rescue it even partially with Champions League qualification due to their losing to Tottenham in the Europa League Final.

While there are a multitude of things going wrong at the club, one of the primary reasons which could be attributed to their poor season was their failure in front of goal with 44 Premier League goals their worst-ever tally in front of goal.

Ironically, Gyökeres found the form that has catapulted him into being recognised as one of the best strikers in the world at least in part because of his relationship when working with Ruben Amorim in his early days, both manager and player reportedly had a strong relationship.

Had United won the Europa League and qualified for next season’s Champions League I think this price of 6/1 would have been slashed in half but due to that result against Tottenham, it’s very hard to see there being enough scope for this transfer.

Others?

Next in the betting is Atlético Madrid with odds of 10/1, they certainly have seen some of the best strikers grace the game over the last decade.

PSG can never be ruled out of making a major splurge and can be gotten at 12/1 while Liverpool can also be gotten at the same price.
