Leo Varadkar is being backed for a shock extension to his tenure as Taoiseach after he was gambled to stay in position following his address to the nation on Tuesday.
The Fine Gael leader provided an update on the Coronavirus emergency from Government Buildings and called on Ireland to ‘come together as a nation by staying apart.’ He was then scheduled to be locked in talks with Fianna Fáil on Wednesday as the negotiations over the formation of a new government were ramped up amid the growing crisis.
Micheál Martin remains the favourite to take over as Taoiseach after Fianna Fáil won 37 seats plus the Ceann Comhairle in February’s general election, but Varadkar is now at this shortest price since the vote after he shortened into 9/4 from 8/1 with BoyleSports.
Micheál Martin has suggested a coalition can be formed even without the Green Party and it’s Independent TDs who are now the most likely candidates to make up the numbers at 11/8 to prop up Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael.
We noticed a spike in interest in the chances of Leo Varadkar still being Taoiseach in a new government following his speech, which seems to have gone down well.
