The odds on a second general election taking place in Ireland this year have shrunk by more than 50% over the past week, after opinion polls indicated a surge in support for Fine Gael.
Acting Taoiseach Leo Varadkar moved this week to cool a new wave of support for a second visit to the polling stations, some of which came from his own junior ministers after a new survey showed support for the party at 35%, comfortably ahead of their showing at February’s general election.

The odds on another general election before the year is out was 5/1 just a week ago, but having been nibbled into 7/2 earlier this week, it is now just a short 2/1 shot with BoyleSports.
Varadkar has told TDs not to be ‘buoyed’ by the prospect of a snap election and the chances of his party striking a coalition deal with Fianna Fáil and the Green Party remains an odds-on shot despite drifting slightly from 2/9 to 2/7 this week.
