Now Scheffler is being well backed to remain on course for a historic grand slam by following up in the USPGA as each-way support for the American was bolstered by BoyleSports’ extension of their place terms to 11 places.
The Holywood man finished just four shots off the winning score to record a fifth-place finish on his reappearance at the Wells Fargo Championship this month and at 12/1 only has Scheffler and Rahm ahead of him in the betting at Southern Hills.
A victory in the second major of the year would be McIlroy’s third PGA Championship and a fifth career major, having last landed one of golf’s big four at the same tournament back in 2014 at Valhalla in Kentucky.
McIlroy and Rahm therefore lead the European challenge ahead of Norwegian Viktor Hovland, who is rated at 20/1 to break his major duck following three top-ten finishes on the PGA Tour this year.
Lowry has also been a popular selection and as a result has been trimmed into 22/1 from 28/1 to double his major tally and add to the Claret Jug he won at The Open at Royal Portrush in 2019.
