USA v Vietnam Betting Odds

USA Women - 1/1000

Vietnam Women - 50/1

The Draw - 50/1

The oddsmakers make the USA an incredible 1/1000 favourite, Vietnam are 50/1 while the draw is also 50/1.

The Form - USA vs Vietnam

USA’s Form

USA are currently ranked 1st in the world, coming into this tournament in impeccable form with eight wins from eight matches in 2023 with nineteen goals scored and only one goal conceded. During that run the Americans have beaten the likes of Canada, Brazil and Ireland.

They qualified for the World Cup by winning the 2022 CONCACAF Women's Championship beating Canada in the final 1-0. At this World Cup, they have been drawn in Group E with Vietnam, Netherlands and Portugal.

Vlatko Andonovski was named USA Head Coach on October 28th, 2019, and has guided his side in sixty-one matches to a record of fifty wins, five draws and just six defeats. That works out to a win rate of 81.97%.

Vietnam’s Form

Vietnam are currently ranked 32nd in the world and have had a busy, yet decent, 2023 albeit against considerably weaker opposition than those they will be facing at the World Cup. This Vietnamese squad have a record of six wins and four defeats from their ten outings.

While no superstars exist in their squad, really, a large amount of them come from 2/3 clubs, so expect a lot of continuity within the squad. Furthermore, Captain Huỳnh Như has a solid record of 67 goals in 103 games for her country.

Mai Đức Chung is the country’s most successful manager and was appointed in 2016 for his fourth spell as manager of the team. This will be their debut year at a World Cup, which they qualified through via their 2022 AFC Women's Asian Cup playoff victory back in February last year beating Thailand and Chinese Taipei.

USA vs Vietnam Preview

USA’s Tactics

Back in 2019, the USA demolished Thailand 13-0 in their opening game of the World Cup showcasing their dominance on the global stage. I’m expecting to see a similar result against Vietnam, and they could dominate 75%+ of the ball if they want to. That’s the difference in quality between both teams.

Head Coach Vlatko Andonovski sets up this USA side in a 4-3-3 attacking formation and while they could arguably put out any coherent starting line-up and put a cricket score past Vietnam. I’d suspect they will put out what they believe to be their strongest side, grab as many goals as quickly as possible before bringing on the fringe players to give them some minutes.

Alyssa Naeher (35) will be the USA Number 1 in what will likely be her final World Cup and her supporting back-four will likely have Fox and Dunn in the Full-Back positions with Cook and Girma as the supporting CBs with the former replacing Sauerbrunn who has been ruled out of the World Cup due to injury.

In midfield the return of the USA legend Julie Ertz from injury will provide USA with a steel and defensive stability her 2.16 Blocks P/90 in the 99th per, centile, 2.62 Clearances P/90 in the 99th percentile, Aerials Won 3.09 P/90 in the 95th percentile and 8.64 Progressive Passes in the 99th percentile for all midfielders. Lavelle and Horan will be Ertz’s first-choice partners.

Top-scorer favourite Morgan will likely lead the line with Smith who averages 6.22 Progressive Carries P/90 (99th percentile) on the right with Thompson or Rodman as the player on the left of the three.

Vietnam Tactics

Vietnam are considered by many as the biggest underdogs of the tournament so it will be a tough job for Mai Đức Chung on the biggest stage of Women’s Football to ensure they do themselves justice.

Their team doesn’t really have any “superstars” in fact star striker Như Huỳnh is the only player currently contracted to a European team. The rest of the squad all play their football in the domestic, but from that they will benefit from the continuity of the baulk of their side playing regular club-football with each other.

While they will also benefit from the bulk of their squad being experienced players Internationally for Vietnam.

The classic 4-4-2 has been used frequently in the past by Vietnam but more recently their go to formation has been 5-4-1. And I expect that to be the case at this World Cup where they will sit in a low-block and restrict the space of their opposition.

While I expect they won’t be doing much attacking against the USA, in possession they can transition to a 3-4-3 as the wing-backs push up to settle either side of the double-pivot, creating a line of four players in the middle of the pitch although their defenders are poor on the ball so they may go long at this World Cup.

In defence they be quite aggressive in their high press occasionally forcing mistakes. Vietnam will likely engage in a lot of duels and persistent fouling to try and limit scoring chances for the opposition from open-play.

USA vs Vietnam Head-to-Head Results

The two teams will meet for the first time in this game. Vietnam are the 57th different opponent the USA Women's team will have faced.

USA vs Vietnam Prediction

Prediction: USA 8-0 Vietnam

Tournament favourites USA are going for their third successive World Cup victory having won the event in 2015 and 2019. Vietnam are coming into this match on the other end of the scale as World Cup debutants.

The USA have been imperious in 2023 and I’d expect them to score a bucket-load of goals against Vietnam.

Best Bet: Total Goals Over 7.5 @ 6/4

The other big game this Saturday sees European Champions England also get their campaign under way. We previewed England's World Cup opener against Haiti in a recent post.
