US PGA Championship Betting Favourites

Xander Schauffele

The betting favourite for the 2024 US PGA Championship is Xander Schauffele at odds of 12/5. Those odds imply that Schauffele has a 29.4% chance of winning this year’s PGA Championship.

For Schauffele it has been a story of ‘nearly’ at the major championships in his career to date with 6 top-5 finishes at golf’s biggest events. His closest calls were a T2 at the 2018 Open Championship and 2019 Masters.

The American has felt like a man destined to win a major for a long time given his consistently strong performances in the events. After shooting an opening round 62 he now holds a 3-shot lead going into the second day.

There’s still a lot of golf to be played at Valhalla but given Schauffele’s talent, he is worthy of the short odds of 12/5 that he has been given to go ahead and break his major duck.

Scottie Scheffler

The second favourite for the PGA Championship is Scottie Scheffler at 4/1. Those odds suggest that Scheffler has a 20% chance of winning what would be his second consecutive major championship.

Scheffler has been a sensation since 2020, recording 10 top-10 finishes in 15 appearances at the majors. Included in that are 2 wins, both coming at Augusta National, first in 2022 and then again earlier this year.

The American is a preposterously great ball striker, perhaps the best we’ve seen on tour since prime Rory or even prime Tiger. It is the short stick that can betray him at times but when he gets that going (which he has done recently) he’s almost unbeatable.

The Texan finds himself 5 shots back of leader Schauffele going into the 2nd round after he shot an opening round 67 to post -4. Obviously, he’d prefer to be closer to the top but he is still in touch and well-positioned to charge up the leaderboard over the coming days.

Rory McIlroy

After an opening round 66, McIlroy finds himself 4 shots back of the lead and T5 heading into Friday. The Hollywood native is 3rd favourite in the betting at odds of 5/1 as things stand.

Rory fans will be hoping that he can draw on positive memories of Valhalla having won the PGA the last time it was here in 2014. Given that, we know this course suits his game and his eye. It’s also worth noting that McIlroy is dealing with personal issues off the course with reports that he has filed for divorce from his wife.

Perhaps being on the golf course will feel like a welcome distraction for McIlroy this week and odds of 5/1 are tempting, to say the least, given his history here.

Brooks Koepka

Next up in the betting, we have Brooks Koepka who is a 12/1 chance to win this PGA Championship per the latest golf odds at BoyleSports.

Brooks Koepka and the PGA Championship. It has been a match made in heaven for the better half of the last decade. The American has notched up 3 wins at this major championship, those victories came in 2018, 2019 and 2023.

The 5-time major champion has been prolific at this event and he has put himself right in the mix again after an opening round 67 has him T12 and 5 shots back of the lead. Given his track record at PGA Championship setups, you could make the argument that he is the best value up near the top of the betting at odds of 12/1. If I were to pick out an in-play bet then Koepka would be my choice as things stand.

The Chasing Pack

There are a host of other star names in contention after round 1. Collin Morikawa (14/1), a 2-time major champion and winner of this event in 2020, is a name to keep an eye out for as this tournament progresses. He shot an opening round 66 to put himself T5 heading into Friday.

The world number 12 Sahith Theegala (18/1) is also in contention as he finds himself T2nd after an opening round of -6. Another man at -6 is fellow American Tony Finau who is a 22/1 chance to win his first major this weekend. Finau was a player that seemed destined for major success earlier in his career but has since cooled off at the major as he has been without a top-10 in the big events since 2021. When on form he certainly has the game required to win this tournament.

Looking further out in the betting we have Bryson DeChambeau at 30/1. DeChambeau is 6 shots back of the lead after an opening round 68. He can’t be ruled out of the running yet but the eccentric American will need to close the gap going into the weekend if he is to stand a chance. Max Homa (35/1) is also on -3 and 6 shots back. Homa has shown some strong form this season with a T3 at the Masters earlier this spring. He is trending in the right direction in the majors but has a lot of work to claw back that 6-shot deficit over the next 54 holes.
