UFC 280 Picks & Predictions
UFC Lightweight Championship | Charles Oliveira vs Islam Makhachev
This UFC Lightweight Championship fight is the main event of the evening and sets up to be a great fight between two of the best fighters in the sport.
Charles Oliveira (6/4), who holds a 33-8 pro MMA record, is a submission specialist with 22 of his wins coming via submission. Oliveira is a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and it is these grappling skills that make him a nightmare for any opponent.
Islam Makhachev (1/2) holds a 22-1 pro MMA record. He was trained in the Russian martial art of sambo which makes him a phenomenal wrestler in the octagon. Makhachev’s wrestling abilities should be a crucial part of deciding this fight on Saturday.
Against almost every other opponent Oliveira would hold the advantage in terms of grappling but Islam will hold no fear of getting this fight to the floor. Most of Oliveria’s opponents are afraid of his Jiu Jitsu abilities but Islam is the best wrestler in the division and would welcome bringing the fight to the mat.
On top of this Islam is a good striker with Jiu Jitsu skills of his own so he really has all the tools needed to matchup against Oliveira. I think Makhachev controls this fight on the floor and gets the decision win.
Prediction: Makhachev to win by decision or technical decision at 7/2

Aljamain Sterling vs TJ Dillashaw
There is a lot of excitement around this fight and it is easy to see why. These fighters have bad blood between them with Sterling labelling Dillashaw a ‘cheater’ recently in reference to a two year drug ban that he received.
Aljamain Sterling (8/15) is the current UFC Bantamweight Champion who holds a pro MMA record of 21-3. Of Sterling’s 21 wins, 10 have come via decision and 8 have been via submission. The Jamaican-American typically dominates opponents with his wrestling and striking.
TJ Dillashaw (11/8) on the other hand holds a 17-4 pro MMA record and is a former two-time UFC Bantamweight Champion. Prior to Dillashaw’s lengthy two-year ban he was one of the very best fighters in mixed martial arts and was in consideration to be the UFC’s top pound-for-pound fighter.
Sterling looks to have the clear advantage going into this fight as he is fighting a man who is three years his senior with little fighting action in the past couple years. The lighter weight divisions like bantamweight are typically not kind to older fighters.
Dillashaw’s fighting style has always been based around suddenness and quick movements both on his feet and in grappling. I fear that he doesn't have the speed that he did before. There are concerns around Dillashaw’s conditioning too as the fight goes on.
Sterling is truly an underrated fighter and maybe he starts to get the credit that he deserves after this fight. I expect Sterling to get this fight to the ground when he wants and to dominate it from there.
Prediction: Aljamain Sterling by submission at 4/1

This is an interesting fight involving Sean O’Malley who is one of the most hyped fighters in the UFC today.
Petr Yan (1/3), who holds a 16-3 professional MMA record, is the #1 ranked contender in the UFC’s bantamweight division. 8 of Yan’s wins have come via decision with another 7 coming by way of KO/TKO. The Russian comes into this fight off the back of a split decision loss to Bantamweight Champion Aljamain Sterling.
Sean O’Malley (21/10) is the #11 ranked contender in the bantamweight division and boasts a 15-1 pro MMA record. O’Malley has become a knockout specialist with 11 of his wins coming via KO/TKO and another 3 via decision.
In terms of the rankings, O’Malley looks to be way outmatched in this fight. In this case, the rankings give us a pretty good reflection of the difference in quality between the two fighters.
Don’t get me wrong, O’Malley is developing into a fighter that could challenge for the bantamweight belt in a couple of years, but this fight is too much too soon for him. Yan is far superior to any opponent O’Malley has come up against in his UFC career thus far.
Yan is a better all-around fighter than the American and I don’t think O’Malley will be able to hold up to Yan’s striking for three five-minute rounds. On top of that, Yan has a quality takedown game to fall back on, though I doubt he’ll need it.
Prediction: Petr Yan by KO TKO or Disqualification at 3/1
