Tyson Fury v Oleksandr Usyk Preview

Undisputed Heavyweight Champion

The winner of Fury vs Usyk would potentially crown the first undisputed heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis in 2000, as well as the first in the four-belt era.

On 25 October, Fury and Usyk took to social media to announce that they had signed for a bout, with a date of 23 December being reported but not officially announced. However, following Fury’s fight against Ngannou, Fury demanded the fight be postponed due to injuries he sustained during the fight.

Fury’s Story

Tyson Fury (35) is arguably the most enigmatic character currently in the fight business across any sport. From 2008 to 2015 he rose from someone who was fighting in local gyms and small arenas across the UK to someone who on the 28th of November 2015 defeated Wladimir Klitschko giving him a record of 25-0 and winning the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, IBO, and The Ring heavyweight titles.

However, while at the time plenty expected Fury to go on to dominate the boxing business for some time, the story went very differently. Following the fight, Fury spiralled into alcohol drugs and depression, drinking up to eighteen beers a day as he struggled to cope with his newfound fame as Heavyweight Champion his weight ballooned by ten stone which saw him stripped of his titles.

He is back now and since his return to the ring in June 2018 for the first time since his victory over Klitschko in November 2015 he has won 9 bouts and has drawn once and is the current WBC and Lineal heavyweight champion. However, his recent victory against Ngannou where he narrowly won by Split Decision drew question marks about his performance.

What They’ve Said

Tyson Fury:

"It's not personal. It's strictly business for both fighters. There's a lot of stuff on the line, but I don't hate him. I respect him as a man, as a fighter. Anyone would have to respect the man's achievements. He's unified heavyweight champion, undisputed cruiserweight champion.”

"I'm the best. I'm just defending my 'best-ness' against him. We have weight divisions for a reason. When the cruiserweights step up to the big boys, usually they get found wanting. You can beat the average big ones, but you can't beat the elite big ones because size really matters. These are facts."

Oleksandr Usyk's promoter Alexander Krassyuk:

"It's the fight of a lifetime. The whole world is waiting for it. Let's pray for Tyson and expect that the guy enters the ring.

"I can tell you about the secret weapon of Usyk's, the only problem is it's not a secret. His weapon is his mind, his heart, his experience and boxing skills. And the main thing about him that is different from Tyson Fury is his discipline. That is what makes him great, and it is his toughest weapon."

Tyson Fury v Oleksandr Usyk Prediction

Fury’s Boxing Talents are there for everyone to see and his rise up the boxing ladder, and adversity before rising to the top again is certainly a poignant lesson for anyone that tough times don’t last, tough people and anyone can overcome adversity and struggles.

Usyk is a brilliant boxer and arguably the toughest task of Fury’s career so far and will come into the bout full of confidence in his abilities. He’s 2 years older than Fury but shows no signs of letting up and his KO victory against Daniel Dubois would be a stronger line of form than Fury stumbling over the line against Ngannou last October.

This could be a bout for the ages with two tip-top boxers going toe to toe, I could see this being an extremely closely fought fight with both cancelling each other out for a shock draw.

Prediction: Draw @ 12/1
