Willie Mullins – Trainers’ Championship Favourite

Willie Mullins has seen his odds to claim a maiden British Jumps Trainers’ Championship slashed into 1/2 (from 4/1) with BoyleSports after a successful raiding party at Aintree saw the Carlow-based handler top the table.

Four winners across the opening two days of the meeting saw Mullins pick up £320,389 and plenty of place money before I Am Maximus propelled the stable to the top of the Trainers’ Championship, with a £500,000 win in Saturday’s feature, the Grand National.

Fourteen-time champion Paul Nicholls was 2/5 just days ago, but he failed to hit the mark with any of his runners across the festival and his odds have since drifted out to 10/3. Dan Skelton will look to spoil the Mullins party at odds of 3/1 after picking up two valuable handicaps at the Liverpool venue as he searches for his first Champion Trainer title.

A lead of just over £62,500 carries Mullins into the final two weeks of the season, with Sandown’s Gold Cup meeting bringing the curtain down on another successful year for the trainer, with the Champion Hurdle, Gold Cup and Grand National the jewels in a £2,874,693.26 crown.

Important meetings at Perth and Ayr are still to come and Mullins will be mob-handed in the big races. A 10-strong entry in the Scottish Grand National is led by ante-post favourite Macdermott, while Nick Rockett looks to hold a leading chance on the final day of the season in the Gold Cup at Sandown, a race worth over £90,000 to the winner.

It’s been 70 years since Vincent O’Brien recorded the second of his back-to-back Champion Trainer wins and Mullins is primed to become only the second Irish-based trainer to complete the feat as he looks to conquer Ireland and England in the same season.

Brian O’Keeffe, spokesperson for BoyleSports, said:

“It looks like I Am Maximus’ win in the Grand National could propel Willie Mullins into the history books once again.  We rate him as the red-hot favourite to become just the second Irish-based trainer to be crowned champion of the UK.”
