Toulouse v Ulster Preview

Toulouse Form

Toulouse are the form team in European Rugby right now having won both the 22/23,  and 23/24 Top 14 league trophies in the past two seasons as well as the European Champions Cup last year when they defeated Leinster in the final by a 31-21 scoreline that was their first victory in the competition since their 22-17 win over La Rochelle in the 20/21 season.

Their tip-top form has continued into this season with 6 victories and just 3 defeats from their opening 9 games in the Top-14 Championship meaning they lead the league phase of the competition with 30 points a point ahead of closest challengers Bordeaux. Interestingly, they’ve only 18 tries conceded in the competition which is 4 less than the next-best defence and only 145 points conceded 56 points better than the next-best defence Toulon with 201 conceded.

They head into this game as very worthy favourites and will be seeking their third successive win in all competitions.

Ulster Form

Ulster Rugby is seemingly in a constant state of being good enough to compete against any side on their day and yet never good enough to win trophies. In the 22/23 season, they finished 2nd in the United Rugby Championship before being eliminated in the Quarter-Finals and reached the Round of 16 of the Champions Cup. Last year in the United Rugby Championship they came 6th in the league and were knocked out in the Quarter-Finals in both that and the Challenge Cup.

They’ve had a poor start to the 24/25 season though with only 3 victories and 4 defeats from their opening 7 matches and have a negative score difference of -18. However, there are some grounds for optimism in their latest defeat against Leinster only by a 20-27 scoreline.

It ended up double scores last time Ulster met Toulouse and they will certainly be expecting to be closer come the final whistle on Sunday.

Key Players

Antoine Dupont – Toulouse

Antoine Dupont (28), France and Toulouse Captain and Scrum-Half, is the best in his position in the World and consistently shows himself to be excellent defensively with freakish strength for his size. Expect everything to go through him at the weekend and he will be the driving force behind everything good about Toulouse.

Jacob Stockdale– Ulster

Stockdale (28) has been a prolific player for Ulster debuting for his province in 2016 putting 235 points on the scoreboard from his 125 appearances including three tries in the United Rugby Championship this season. Someone prolific for Ireland too when called upon (arguably deserving of more caps) scoring 95 points in just 38 appearances. He’s being linked with a move to Racing 92 for next season.

Toulouse v Ulster Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: Toulouse 26-8 Ulster

Toulouse are the benchmark in World Rugby and the return of Antoine Dupont to the fold makes them an even more frightening proposition for any respective opponents and will fancy themselves to have a comfortable cushion at the end of this match.

While Ulster have performed below par when it comes to their expectation levels so far they retain somewhat of a try threat. Only Leinster and Glasgow (32) have more than their 26 try total which they’ve level with Munster, Connacht and Edinburgh so a quick start from the likes of Stockdale is not impossible.

Toulouse should be on a different level though especially with the game being held in France.

Best Bet: Ulster First Try @ 5/2
