When is the 2024 Open Championship?

The 2024 Open Championship is set to start on Thursday, July 18th with the first tee time being at 6.35 am. The tournament is set to finish on Sunday evening with the winner being crowned ‘Champion Golfer of the Year’.

Scottie Scheffler – The Open Championship Favourite

The favourite to win the 2024 Open Championship is Scottie Scheffler at odds of 5/1. Those odds imply that Scheffler has a 16.7% chance of winning this major championship.

Scheffler’s status as British Open favourite is no surprise. In fact, it has become the norm in recent years that the Texan goes into golf’s big 4 tournaments as the man to beat.

The current world number one has opted to take a break in the run-up to this Open Championship and do his own preparations for links golf as opposed to playing in the Scottish Open or continuing to play stateside. The big question mark hanging over Scheffler heading into this week at Royal Troon is his relatively underwhelming record at the Open. With just 3 appearances at The Open his record reads as T8, T21, T23. Just one top 10 for Scheffler and form that is not progressive raises legitimate concerns over his ability to win on a links golf course.

Rory McIlroy – The Open Championship Second-favourite

The second favourite for The Open is Rory McIlroy at 15/2. Those odds suggest that McIlroy has an 11.8% chance of winning the 2024 Open Championship.

The Northern Irishman is now 10 years without a major despite being among the favourites going into every major in the time since that last win. This week he will be hoping to finally put an end to that winless streak.

However, his latest defeat in the majors, coming at the US Open, has to be the most difficult of losses to take after he bogeyed 3 of the last 4 holes to lose to Bryson DeChambeau by 1 shot. You really do have to question whether McIlroy will be able to bounce back from one of the most devastating losses we’ve seen in major championships that went down the stretch.

If you’re looking for a positive spin, then you can point to the fact that the Hollywood native is the current world number 2, has 3 wins to his name this season, and has strong recent form at The Open with a 3rd and T6-finish in his last two appearances.

Next up in the betting we have Xander Schauffele who is 12/1 to win this tournament. That implies that Schauffele has a 7.7% chance of lifting the Claret Jug at the end of this tournament.

The world number 3 ranked golfer ended his wait for a major championship at this year’s US PGA Championship when he prevailed by a shot over Bryson DeChambeau at Valhalla. Now with that monkey finally off his back you have to imagine that Schauffle will push on and put himself in the elite category of players that have won multiple majors.

Schauffele also has strong recent form with 4 consecutive top-15 finishes since that US PGA Championship victory which gives punters more reason to fancy the American this week at Royal Troon.

The big concern around Schauffele ahead of this Open Championship is his form at this event. Apart from a T2 finish in 2018 he hasn’t registered another top-10 finish at this major championship. That leads us to think that Schauffele isn’t a links specialist and that this style of golf may not suit him as well as it does others. With that said, his T2 finish in 2018 does suggest if things fall into place he is very much live to contend at this event.

Morikawa is a man that is no stranger to major success with 2 major championships to his name at just 27 years of age.

Included in those 2 successes is a win at Royal St. George’s in 2021. That was amazingly his Open Championship debut. So how has he fared at The Open since then? Not great to say the least. The American missed the cut in his two appearances at the event since then. That is definitely a concern when backing Morikawa for this event.

Brooks Koepka @ 35/1
